Which is the lewd bit?

Isn't this the kind of thing that's been said about characters like James Bond (and more recently Austin Powers wink ) for a long time.

"Women want him, men want to be him".

What makes the MP's example uniquely "sexist" or "misogynistic" as described?

Umm .... Maybe the "men want to sleep with her" bit rolleyes

I'm by no means the wokist person on here .... usually you fight the woke fight but ...
She's a professional well a Welsh MP so close enough person at her workspace and shouldn't encounter unwanted comments like that at the workplace

Straight out the door with your desk contents in a box, if it were the private sector these days.

Different rules for the rule makers.

I was hoping for something more worthy of a headline. Didn't even get an old socialist saying "Nice tits luv" Sid James style.

You'd expect a Lib Dem story to pop up next but they're so low in numbers these days they can't even manage to keep their traditional hardcore perve contingent going.

I'm starting to think that men shouldn't be allowed in parliament until they learn how to behave themselves.

Reportedly "...sleep with..." is a media selected euphemism for the benefit of the more sensitive souls. "Shag the arse off you" is more likely.

Ftfy.

Serious question though. Have they always been so utterly incompetent and it's been harder to see, or is it a new development, I am as far from an anarchist as is possible but I question these days if being ungoverned would be worse.

The trouble is for women in business and professional circles, even if they are very much in the right - offended against - many do not want to get the tag of troublemaker or complainer. The tougher ones simply shrug it off, even deal with the offender face to face and call them out, rather than involving HR and official channels, not least because often HR are utterly useless anyway.

Sounds fairly innocuous, and was probably not badly intended, but the problem with remarks like this is the setting; it would be fine between friends, but it doesn't sound as if that was the case here. And there is the imbalance of power, between what appears to be a young and recent MP afraid to be identified for fear of career damage and a older more senior person.

Just wrong in the circumstances. A senior MP/shadow minister should know this! People skills?

I do think it's a certain type of politician. I'd wager that it's Fettes, Eton, Harrow to Oxbridge and into journalism or the family business before joining their mates in politics. They would behave in the exact same way in the private sector as they're protected by a family name or school connections.

I was watching the recent Netflix documentary about John Wayne Gacy and it touched frequently on how he was desperate for (political) power. Now I’m not saying everyone who wants power is a murdering psychopath but I genuinely do think there has to be something a bit wrong with you to seek to have huge amounts of power. I reckon power should be given to those reluctant to accept it.

Why is anyone in the least surprised at any of this, on the right, left or centre?

Politicians are narcissists by definition, that is why they go into politics, so acting as if they are gods gift and everyone fancies them goes with the territory. I'm sure 'twas ever thus but in the age of social media and trial my MSM it now 'gets out' and then suddenly its seen as something new, which it sure as hell isn't

Why don't these people report it at the time, if they had done maybe something would have been done about it and it would have prevented further instances of it happening.

Perhaps they were 'flattered' at the time and then subsequently saw an oppo to make to some cheap political capital, ..but what would I know!

Because they are more interested in saving it for political gain when it becomes a hot topic than bringing about change.

(Or they aren’t actually bothered about it at the time until it smells of political point scoring)

Or they are afraid they won't be believed, or of the harm it may do to their career, particularly if they are young and new to their role.

That, maybe they don't want to drag themselves through the muck for the guy involved to get a slap on the wrist and be back in parliament in a year, if he even has to leave.

In every single case where allegations of sexual misconduct / harassment / abuse / rape are made someone will make the above comment.

I would have thought that by now it is obvious - one group of people do report the incident and are overwhelmingly not believe and no further action is taken. The other group of people don’t bother reporting the incident because they know from experience that they won’t be believed and no further action will be taken.

This sounds more plausible
