Brembos on a 987.2 circa 2009:

Boxster replaced approx 3K miles ago last June according to the SH of this recent new purchase to me .New disks + pads were done .
Innermost 1 cm seems like no pad contact hence the corrosion.

Cars been stood a bit until I bought it l
I’ve done 400 miles normal driving with a bit of stand on braking bearing in mind Porsche s affliction with disk corrosion.
I know Porsche disks corrode with a drop of water and the inners in particular corrode even in use .
All the others are pretty immaculate inc the inner surfaces except this NSR out side .
Just sailed through its MOT by the dealer 400 miles ago BTW .No advisory’s .
Any suggestions guys ?

Was thinking it’s sticking .
Was thinking remove the pad and checking it’s not binding , properly seated ?
Maybe check the caliper bit were the pad ears fit are clean etc .= grease up ?
Maybe place a thinner piece of something instead and allow the pistons to come out 3/5 mm ? To check for corrosion binding ?

Why s it not pressing equally?

Remove wheel, carefully remove rust build up in the area concerned, new pads & then give the brakes some welly to clean the disc further.

If that's both sides i'd double check its got the correct brake pads and/or discs installed, bit of a coincidence the same unswept section on both discs.

One other thought, some brake pads the friction material has chamfered edges, intiial wear taking place on a smaller surface area which increases as the pads wear down, either way the pads need to come out and see whether its sticking sliders or parts are the issue.

Brembos used to say something, now they just seem to be another cheap, Chinese made, mass produced car part.
ECP's knock them out now as a bargain part.
I had trouble with them years ago and now steer clear.

There's not very much new looking about those, either that or you live on the coast with lots of salt air ?

If overly concerned, buy new quality discs and pads and ensure all other aspects of braking are in good order.

That photo is pretty dark on my screen and hard to make out the state of the disc. After you've used the brakes firmly half a dozen times at 30mph+ you should see clear signs that the pads are bearing on both sides of both discs and the swept area should be mostly rust free.

If you have any pad that's doing no work at all, you have a faulty caliper or slider. If a pad is doing some work but not cleaning the whole swept area of the disk you have a faulty caliper/slider or worn friction components. In any case if part of the rotor is staying rusty that's a problem you need to fix.

Just to be clear the other 3 are perfect on both sides .I have an inspection pit .
Thx for the responses .

I took the wheel off to find the pin totally crusted and corroded , the pads did not want to push back either esp the offending outer .Ceased on the retaining pin .They pushed back easy with the pin removed and the pistons looks nice and clean what little ( newish pads ) I could see .

Pic of disk new about 1 k to 2 k buts it’s over wintered .
SH suggest new Brembo kit was bought and given to a “ John Doe “ garage to fit .
Looks like no fitting kit the old spring clip and pin reused .

How ever the pin stuck .Needed shed loadsa WD40 freeing juice and a huge hammer to budge it .
I got it out carefully with a punch etc .Cleaned it up sanded off the crust and refitted checked for ease and free movement of the pads with it in place .

Wire brushed out carefully ( sos not to rip the boots ) the inside of the caliper were the pads touch .
Wire brushed up the now corroded metal pad edges .
Appplied a thin layer of copper slip grease , I know controversy with this , to the corroded areas.
Especially the pin .
Reassembled.Went for a short stump on brakes session traffic permitting .It looks like they are starting to cover the swept area .Time will tell if it completely gets rid of that net rust rim .

Why do folks skimp on the fitting kit ? Ie new spring + pin ?

It’s a 2nd / 3 rd car so with 2/3 K miles Pa it’s gonna take me years to wear out the brakes .
As a precaution I repeated the work with the NSR , it’s pin came out easy , but there was no grease anywhere.
Next MOT is 11 1/2 M .

Either they weren't serviced 3k miles ago, or they were serviced by somebody who did a half-arsed job.
