Petrol Fillup Dilemma
Discussion
Hi Folks,
Now here's one for you...
I just tried to fill up in 3 garages near where I work and guess what?...I can't get the damn nozzle in!
Can anyone tell me which garages they fill their S2 Elises up at then I can see if we have any near me.
OR...
Is there an adapter you can buy to help at any garage.
Regards,
Mac

That's weird - never heard of that before.
I use Shell Optimax (it's the closest to my house which is a help!) but have, when stranded, used Tescos and also Esso. (also the M25 Clackets Lane ones too, can't rememebr what petrol brand they are though).
All have gone in no problems at all.

You are putting unleaded in - right?
Unleaded nozzles are smaller than LRP and Diesel to try and avoid mis-fuelling. BP Ultimate Petrol and Diesel is labelled very similar.
Don't bother with Optimax every time, it's too expensive, just put the odd tankful in to keep it clean. It is, after all, only a Rover K-Series.

Geeeezzz...Yep I'm deffinitely putting in ordinary unleaded.
Am I really the only person having this trouble??
I must be doing something wrong, although I'm sure I can manage a petrol nozle after 20 years...lol
...Could something be damaged???

Mac
Well it seemed like a good place to start and was a bit more useful than "I use Optimax"
I take it the nozzle is too big to fit or does it not go in far enough?

Sorry, perhaps I should have said "I use Shell Optimax and don't / haven't had any problems."

Errrrr - if someone told me a petrol pump nozzle wouldn't fit in an unleaded car that's the first question I'd ask as the nozzles are a different size.
The same question got same response on SELOC.
You're wasting your money with Optimax BTW

The nozzle goes in almost straight down i.e vertically, where as the mounting of the cap on the sloped side of the car gives you the impression the nozzle goes in at 45 degrees. Try jabbing the thing straight downwards.
i was just about to say this as when i got my elise i had problems figuring out how to fill it up as the nossle didn't appear to want to fit. has to be almost vertical in the hole - looks stupid and wrong tbh
incidentally i fill up at shell cos i get it free

First up, IIRC there's no point in using premium fuels (i.e. more than 95 RON) in a K-Series because the engine doesn't have a knock sensor so you're not gaining any added benefit by doing so.
Save your cash for better oil or something.
I think the problem described is probably due to pressure in the tank - I've found that when undoing the cap there's a lot of hissing as pressure is released from the system. I now turn the cap half a turn and let all the gas escape before taking the cap off fully. Then I never seem to get any 'spray' effect or the pump cutting off immediately.
Hope that helps a little.
