We're overdue for a new TV and we sit a fair way away from the screen, so a 75 is about right. It's quite a bright room and we watch the usual mix of Freeview and paid services. We don't game. It'll be hooked up to a Yamaha soundbar and subwoofer.

I can't justify running to an LG A1 oled and have narrowed it down to the two above, at similar money. Any thoughts chums?

ETA
I'm tending towards the Samsung because it has greater brightness than the Sony

I was a bit worried about OLED not being bright enough after watching so many reviews on OLED TV's. Honestly, it's not a problem. I have a Sony A80J and it's plenty bright enough. I doubt there will be any difference in picture quality between the two...they'll both be amazing. It all comes down to the user interface. The Sony is crap in this regard...it's clunky and horrible, which is why I still use my trusty BT YouView box for most things, and a PC for YouTube duties and watching the occasional 'obtained' movie.

Agree with what you say about OLED brightness - but a 75" OLED is going to be over £2k - which is more than the OP wants to pay.

I was going to laugh at a 75" OLED for 2 grand... but it's true. Blimey. They've come down in price a lot. Interesting....

My bad...I thought they were OLEDs.
Well, I wouldn't even consider anything other than an OLED having owned one for a while. The difference is night and day (literally). I'd hold out and have some more pennies for sure.

I'd respectfully disagree on that. A lot of the technologies now "QLED" etc. are incredibly refined, improvements like miniLED backlighting individual pixels....

I have a superb 55" OLED, but if I was going bigger I'd have no qualms about any major brand panel that didn't use OLED, eg a Sony DirectLED.

As was highlighted above, the user interface is the more likely annoyance than the last lumen of brightness.

Both good LCD TVs for the money.
Of the two, I’d go for the Smasung, as their affordable models just seem nicer to look at.
Easier to use and less clumsily plasticky.

Sony can be SO annoying in operation, plus the big development for them is in OLED.
Samsung are stuck with all their eggs in the LCD camp and are developing that tech further.
Yes, they are guilty of pseudo science and psycho babble bullst, but that’s marketing departments for you.

Utter bargain at the moment, but be quick before they run out and it’s all RRP ‘22/23 models.

I think that's pretty much where I've got to. I talked myself up from the 70-series to the 80, which seems to be about the right balance of performance vs price at £1399. It's the leap to £1999 for the OLED LG A1 that I can't see myself making - is it really that much better than the Samsung (and I also have a nagging doubt about its performance in our room v-a-v brightness)?

As a side note it seems quite difficult to compare tvs in JLP and others, as they all seem to set them on some sort of ultra-vivid, ultra-bright setting, which isn't something I could watch at home. I guess that's what buyers expect.

Because reason I didn't get around to buying when I originally posted a few weeks ago.

Anyway, in the meantime the difference between the Samsung 80A and the LG A1 seems to have reduced to under £250. Does that make the A1 a no-brainer?

Probably yes. LG have a bit of an oversupply of 2021 models, so last years LG product is artificially cheap.
Make sure iit has the 5year warranty and try to get it locally, so it’s not handled roughly by couriers.
