Service history, make sure the running in service was completed at the correct mileage, check the brakes and tyres as they are expensive consumables after that I can’t think of a lot.
Brakes can be noisy if you do a lot of mincing about, I also find the brakes start to give in after a few hard runs but this is an easy fix.
My dad run his M4 Comp for 3 years never had an issue, my M2C running 540hp has never missed a beat currently on 30k 2019
Plenty of S55 related problems posted on the forums, cam miss alignment and crank hub failure being two of the favourite topics. I don’t over think either subject.
Servicing can be expensive maybe get it chucked in the deal…

I've got a 68 plate M4, and I've been really happy in the year and the 7k miles that I've done in it up to yet. The only niggles for me personally are the harsh ride on the 19" wheels, and the noise it makes is a bit marmite I think. Other than that I think that it is a fantastic all round performance car.

Have you had it serviced yet? If so, was it a chunky bill and how was the overall experience?.
I’m still very much in the market for one, and regret not going for the silver 17 plate comp a while ago , I really should have, as soon after the prices became very strong, which put me off, but I think they’re softening slightly now.
Damn me and my procrastination lol.

It has only had a brake fluid change which wasn't bad at all price wise, but from what I read it might be coming up for quite a bit of a chunky service though. I've used my local main dealer for most of the servicing over the years and the experience has been fine with them to be fair.
The M4 comes very highly recommended by me for sure, so if you do go for one I'm sure that you'll be happy with it.

I can't afford one...but I do keep casting my eyes over the current G82 M4 though! I'm one of the few people who actually likes the look of them!

The service pricing is quite transparent on BMW site under value servicing for ars over 3 years. For me total official servicing works out at £200 year but the S55 is a little more expensive as access to the plugs is even harder (apparently). Sometimes BMW send a 20% off offer. I managed to convince my dealer to almost match the local BMW specialist.
68 plate will probably need the expensive 4th service next if not already? It's four years from build date, not registration date.
I've had my 2019/69 Comp since new and covered almost 13,000 miles including several track days. No issues with mine. Servicing has been cheap; £300 RIS and £300 first service. Brake fluid service due in Aug, another cheap one. Tyres are £250 a corner. Never had squeaky OEM brakes. RS29s squeal at low speed though. If you think the ride is hard on the 19s, try the 20s. Road noise in the cabin and lack of decent noise due to the particulate filters are my biggest gripes.
I'd personally only buy an AUC for decent warranty and try and negotiate a second year. There are some expensive failures out there.

Buy from BMW as an approved car for piece of mind.
They don’t sell cars that have been mapped.
Check service history in idrive that the first service is between 1000-1400 miles. Be wary outside of this, worse if it’s late obviously
Head up display and Harmon kardon the main things for resell.

They definitely do sell cars that have been mapped and they have no issue selling a right dog. My mum was stitched hard, lucky we managed to get her money back.
A good few owners on the M2OC have ended up with total dogs, needing new engines, lying saying the cars are fully warranted when they have been modified etc

Yep, still do your homework buying AUC. Ask for it in writing that it has never been mapped. They're lazy and don't check, even though now it flashes up when plugged in. This dealership was was even lazier and tried to sell an ex-salvage car. Strictly speaking it met the AUC criteria of not being written off as it hadn't been written off. A good few owners on the M2OC have ended up with total dogs, needing new engines, lying saying the cars are fully warranted when they have been modified etc

Yep, been buying BMW AUC for 20 years, got badly stung on a 6month old F10 M5 with 3k on the clock that was an absolute wreck. You need to be very careful.
