Diets, Exercise and not losing any weight!
Discussion
Hi All,
Been on a self induced diet for a while (+ following doc's orders lol)
Since i've been on my diet and get fit regime i've gone from 11st 12lbs to 12st 4lbs (i'm only 5ft 7!) Most of its around my belly so much so that i can't get the suit on that I purchased a couple of years ago when I lost a load of weight.
I've been eating smaller portions of whatever I eat and trying not to eat too late in the evening etc. I don't feel hungry at all, just bloated! (i'm guessing not enough fruit!) It feels to me like my body is storing the food I give it as its thinks i'm trying to starve it (I can't remember the last time I had one of those really satisfying dumps lol). I've even cut the beer drinking down and i'm drinking at least 1.5L of water a day.
Exercise wise i'm going to the gym at least twice a week then having a run or playing football once a week as well.
The weight is just staying on! I feel pretty good! i'd just like to get back in my suit!
Any exercise or diet recommendations?
Thanks,
Phill

I had the same problem, working out 5 times a week and ended up putting on weight because I was gaining muscle although I was losing fat.
If you haven't already, it might be worth having a chat with the trainers at your gym to ask them to give you advice on a weight loss regime that allows you to tone up without building too much muscle.
Pilates is also very very good for the stomach muscles and for general toning. Take my word for it!

Muscle is allot denser than fat so it is entirely possible that your increased weight is the result of going to the gym twice a week.
I myself increased in weight by over 2 stone in muscle alone after I started working out after leaving Uni.
(I then started puitting fat on as well when I started driving regularly

)Yep, muscle is heavier so go for less resistance on the cardio cycling or rowing or whatever but up the rate to keep burning calories.
'They' now reckon that apart from taking healthy drinks throughout the day, eating only one meal at night is very good for your health and gives more rapid weight loss. Some guy did it against advice from friends and experts, then found there was new research backing up what he'd done. As diet theories change more often than bart's pants wait a week and they'll tell you to sit on the sofa eating cream cakes.

Can you run? It's the most efficient excerise for leaness and calorie burning. A 1 hour run burns about 1100 Kcal ( going by your weight ) not up to that, well 15min still burns 260Kcal that's your luncitme sandwich gone. Aim to run about 12miles a week if you can, that'll get rid of around 1500kcal. The largest muscle group in your body are in your legs so toning them up will also mean you burn more calories just sitting around.
Weights at the gym aren't really any good for loosing weigh, but again bulking up with muscle will raise the rate at which you burn calories even sitting around ( muscle is active tissue unlike fat ).
Also I found the follwing diet worked for me... soup at lunctime ( quite a filling thick soup not a crappy cuppa soup, think 'Soup Opera' type ) for supper salad with a large piece of protein...either steak/tuna/chicken. And a small bit of carbo, say a pita bread.
Anyway good luck! I went down from 12 3/4 st to 11 1/4 stone in 6 months using the above regieme. I still keep the running up and the weight has stayed off.

You didn't say what you were eating... that bloatedness could mean a bad diet(?)
Normally a bowl of cereral for breakfast and a peice of fruit (if i can find any in the office)
Lunch is normally a baguette with ham or chicken, (No mayo or marg) with a bag of crisps and a yogurt.
Dinner last night was a home made chicken curry with rice followed by a small peice of home made fruit cake.

Mate no offence but that's not a diet
No offence but I doubt the problem is putting on muscle as you say you cant fit into a suit because of your 'belly' (as I read it).
Does your gym offer personal training? Ive recently started having a session every now and again just to break up my routine and give me different idea about training.
I have trained for about 7 or 8 years now I think, and still find a session with a trainer invaluable, just to 'mix it up' a bit and offer new ideas.
Failing the personal trainer route (and it doesnt have to be every time your train) have a look on the internet for body conditioning type exercises - I'm getting into that kind of training now and am laying off the weights.
Does your gym offer classes? Bodypump is good and spinning - body combat looks like hard work as well.
I am trying to say that just going to the gym CAN be a waste of time - as you can simply go through the motions.
With regard to food, I cut out high carb foods in the evening completely and felt better almost instantly. Make sure you are getting lots of fibre, and also think about having something other than baguettes (high in starch I think which can make you feel bloated).
Good luck! You are doing the hard bit already - you just need to tweak what you are doing so you are getting the most out of your efforts.

To all those posters who think its because he's putting on muscle
Gits lol. I know its not as good as it could be! I blame my Dad though (i'm back living at home)
What do you lots suggest. Personally I don't think i'm doing too bad.
Breakfast (at about 7:30) - Bowl of cereal
Lunch (at about 12:00) - baguette with ham or chicken (maybe with a bag of crisps lol) and a yoghurt (muller low fat things)
Dinner (at about 18:00) - Ok last night was a curry (but in my defence it was a small portion of home made chicken curry) followed by a small peice of homemade fruit cake.
Personally I don't think thats too bad considering I had been at the gym that evening.
I don't eat between meals so whats the problem? I'm serious about this so suggest something that I should cut out of change?
Dinners at home are normally home cooked fresh food with new potatos and veg. (small portions!!!!)

I'm not surprised you're feeling bloated and not losing weight if that's what you eat in an evening!
Try eating grilled fish or chicken with salad or steamed veg for dinner instead. Lots of carbs late in the evening is a real no-no because it will sit on your stomach like a brick. Also try drinking some peppermint tea after your dinner as it helps the digestion.
Edited to add that this refers to previous post!

I feel pretty good my general fitness has improved although 90mins of 5 a side still kills me lol.
I think your right about the bread making me bloated just they are the easiest thing to grab to eat around where I work and they are cheap! Salad here I come!

Ok i'll try that really enjoy eating fish etc and i love salad in the summer as its nice and light.
Congratulations on trying. Personally, I subscribe to eating little and often. There is a theory that diets don't really work because your body thinks "Uh-oh, there's a food shortage, I'd better save some". And being an awkward bugger, it stores it round your gut. Losing the belly fat is difficult - try lots of crunches / sit ups and the like. I also think that shocking the body can help - so if you're in a routine, try changing one activity for another.
and I'm sorry about this, but my head will explode if I don't type it - "Dear PH, I eat curry, crisps and cake. Why am I putting on weight?". Or put another way, try crunches - not Crunchies

Listen that last comment was not big and it certainly wasn't clever!
PS I'm not actually putting on weight just not losing any!!
Do you like fish? If so, get hold of a steamer and live on the stuff. Yeah, it can be a bit dull, but can be spiced up. Seriously lose the potatoes, and add more green veg. I rarely now go to bed feeling bloated and fart like a king among men - so everyone's happy
.
How about taking lunch in to work (I recon I save a good £20 a week doing this [£1040 a year!]) that was you control what you eat. Do you have a fridge at work - perhaps take some soup in, or some smoked salmon? Basically eat anything you would have taken the p1ss out of your mates for eating a few years ago
It is difficult when you arent living on your own - my mum used to think it was really helping me out cooking me a nice roast for when I got back from work (it was lovely, but not helping my gym/diet).
What about buying a punchbag and put it up at home - bloody good exercise once you get into it!
