What brand of shocks - 106 GTI
Discussion
Hi
New member so please be kind..
Can anyone let me know what brands of shocks you recommend (or which ones to avoid) for 1997 106 GTI. (believe S16)?
I have the OEM number of 5202P6 but there are so many brands to choose from.
I am buying new springs as well.
My car is not lowered and I am just looking to keep it as original as possible. (I am not doing the work myself)
Any idea what the original brand of shocks are?

Unless you can get a garage to agree to fit what you supply (many won't as it potentially generates work guarantee issues) you will basically be restricted to what they will supply, so maybe get in touch with the garage first or any questions before that are a complete waste of time.
a 106 GTI is increasingly appreciated as a modern classic, with values going up- so I'd fork out for OEM Peugeot shocks if I couldn't find out who the OEM supplier was or what was a good analogue.
You certainly don't want to fit shocks which will ruin the ride.
I fitted 'OEM equivalent' Bilsteins onto my old BMW and they were horrible. I think they use a really high gas pressure which created a horrible stiction and ruined the fluidity. Koni Sports I subsequently fitted are closer to factory in technology and feel, and offer some adjustment on the level of damping.
Brands I would fit with this in mind, Spax, Koni, Sachs, Boge...

Thank you both for your replies, appreciated.
The only ones I have been able to find in stock that match the OEM are TRW and KYB.
It's now my "about town" car (not used very often) rather than a track (never been a track), but I am having the work done that I am told is necessary/advisable.

I have a 205, so not sure if the same applies to the 106, but I believe peugeot where making there own shocks back then. Can peugeot still supply genuine shocks. The alternatives for the 205 are bilstiein b4.
Where are you buying new springs from? I found it very difficult to get good quality spring which aren't lowered.

Springs and shocks no longer available from Peugeot? Or prohibitively expensive.New member so please be kind..

Some would say that the fine balance of these cars was down largely at the time to the in-house dampers.
I'd be going for Sachs as an OEM replacement. This seems to be a fit:

from the list of compatible cars in the listing:
106 MK II: 1.6 i (65 kW ; 05/1996 - 10/1999)
Sachs has been recommended on other frenchie forums by others who have fitted them.

Thank you for your reply. I had been advised by garage to get hydraulic rather than gas but will take a look. Thank you for sharing link.https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/153243678333?epid=15420...

Some are also gas pressurised & this is to help keep the oil de-foamed.
Sachs are a very well known brand & I wouldn't have an issue with them.
