Open to either fuel, looking for flat cornering, good mpg and low tax…..

F56 by a mile. Go for the 2.0 Cooper S or JCW

F56, even in base spec is a blast to drive. A one d can, I believe, be mapped to cooper d spec easily if that's your thing, but truth be told drives really well as is.

It’s the drive that attracts tbh…. Current commute is on fast B roads, so perfect Mini country…

I did 19k miles in my F56 Cooper S(2.0 petrol) over 3.5 years, and it returned 40mpg over that time. It was great fun to drive and frugal for the performance that it offered I thought. They come highly recommended by me for sure.

It was a blast to throw down a nice country road, and I loved its relatively small size and weight big time.

Of course if you're looking at a Cooper S then a fair comparison would be the Fiesta ST. I get 40mpg from my ST3.

How many miles are you doing a year and what’s the nature of your commute?
I have an R58 Cooper S Coupe with the old 1.6T and even on a thrash can get over 40mpg, I expect the 2l engine in the F56 would be the same or maybe even better and it’s supposed to be much more reliable than the Prince engines, although mine is the later ‘N18’ and not had any issues with it so far. I wouldn’t bother with a diesel in a car like this, petrol suits their character.

an F56 Cooper would be my choice

the 1.5 3-pot 'B38' is a cracking engine and is proving to be reliable. A better bet (IMV) than the Ecoboost in the ST-line (which is also a very nice drive)

The triple diesel is a cracking wee lump

We have a F60 Cooper S, so much heavier car than the F56 and we get a return on average of 38-42mpg.

Cooper S is a great car, but depending on your requirements/budget the F56 JCW may also be worth considering.

I’d been looking at them for my Wife until a LCI II JCW 3dr Hatch popped up as a cancelled order this morning, I’ve since secured the car and should be delivered within the next 2-3 weeks.

I've got a One - albeit a new one (!) - and it's so much fun within the legal limit on A & B roads and gives 60mpg at 70 (2200rpm) on the motorway. 65 section go-flat tyres don't seem to detract from the handling

That said, many reviews seem to say the extra BHP in the Cooper is worth the money

You sit so low in the car and the driving position is so perfect you really do feel connected in a way that I haven't had with other cars. Steering is good butr not great and this is one area where the Fiesta is perhaps a bit better

I ran an R56 Cooper D (BMW engine) for a year and a bit and covered 24k miles across a mix of motorways and "twisties". The main thing that struck me was just how good and undiesel-like the engine was in its smooth, linear and torquey power delivery while the nose still felt light and "pointy" and seemed to me to capture the MINI character perfectly. The previous PSA-engined Cooper D was very different with a traditional spikey power delivery. Not to say it's better than the Cooper S or JCW (it most certainly isn't!), but I think for the OP's requirements it offers decent economy whilst retaining the core fun driving characteristics he is after.

No experience of the new model other than a day with a Countryman courtesy car, but it did feel much better screwed together than the R56 with no annoying trim rattles.
