Classic bike insurance

Just getting quotes from compare sites and individual ones.
Putting all the details in and look into the T&Cs of one.
Get to the point of buying a policy and it comes up with,
"The motorcycle is not covered for theft unless in a locked garage"
This is a fully comp policy

Carry on the crazy process a bit longer.
Putting all the details in and look into the T&Cs of one.

I've found that, in recent years, my bikes are only covered for theft if in my locked garage, during the night, whilst at home. They are however covered whilst away from home but it's been a gradual ramp from fully covered to increased excess to no cover at all if not in the garage.
Not really a problem as mine live in the garage anyway but it does seem that, every year they find new ways of either reducing your level of cover (their risk) or getting you to pay more for said cover. The best example being the 'mileage allowance' - WTF that was never a thing back in the old days, you just insured your bike regardless of how many miles you rode, where you kept it, whether you carried a pillion etc.
I've just changed insurer and got a reasonable deal on a 'classic' multi-bike policy, classic because all my bikes are 20+ years old but I had to laugh when I saw that the 'riding other bikes' cover is also only for bikes 20+years old, must be some kind of old Fart's policy...
No doubt some Insurance Company apologist will be along soon to defend their actions but IMO they are generally a bunch of thieving turds...

I've a classic bike policy with Footman James , my bikes are kept in a shipping container on a container farm 10 miles away from my home , might be worth trying them for a quote............downside is no noclaims bonus given with this policyPutting all the details in and look into the T&Cs of one.

Or start your own company and do it differently (till you end up like MCE).
Or pay more for the cover you want.

Have you put down on the quote that it’s garaged or something else?
I had to ask a similar question on the phone to insurance as my classic is not in the garage but in the hallway of my house. They said as long as it’s in a locked, brick built building at my home address then it was all fine.

Mine (Footman James BTW) states must be in locked garage between 10pm and 6am if within 1 mile radius of home but, AIUI bikes are fully covered if more than a mile away or if not during the nighttime hours? My last insurer (Carole Nash) though insisted in locked garage at all times if at home.It will be in a locked garage overnight, but I read it as no theft cover when I'm parked up after riding somewhere. town/cafe/mates house

Or start your own company and do it differently (till you end up like MCE).

I've enquired about classic insurance cover when I had a 20 year old Thunderace last year. The 'must be in a locked garage' is a stipulation on the quotes I had because of having an 'agreed' value if the bike is written off or stolen rather than 'market value.'
I don't have it any more but I have 2 other bikes on a 'normal' multibike policy and they don't have to be garaged in my postcode (but perhaps in others). Just off the road.
It would be too easy otherwise to insure your 'mint' 25 year old bike under classic cover and then have it 'stolen' to get the guaranteed value.....

That’s ok! Incidentally I think posters who suggest the restriction will only apply overnight and at home will be right. Worth checking though to avoid any surprises 
I think that there's sometimes a stipulation where if the bike's within 2 miles of your home address (or something) it has to be locked in your home garage. Which is annoying as my dad lives on the same road and does loads of work on my bikes!
OP your bikes will be covered if you're away from home and they're not garaged. There'd be a lot of very nervous looking old boys at vintage bike events otherwise.
I use Peter James for the classic and vintage bikes now. I find them really reasonable and genuinely a nice bunch when you phone to make any changes or add a bike. Which is my most common phone call
