I’m trying to put all of my self assessment statements into MS Money. Can anyone make head or tail of these things? Why are they so bloody complicated? They don’t seem to follow any logic that I can see.

There are repeated transactions and adjustments. Then, because of the adjustments, they allocated bits of different payments I made to different bits of tax that I owed. So I’ve got payments split out all over the shop.

I’ve got payments from January 2001 split between taxes due in January 2001, and July 2001. Then there’s interest repaid on the bit of the payment that I paid in January but was allocated to July. Repeat ad-nauseum. My brain is running out of my ears ATM.

I’m just trying to enter it in a simple debit credit format that I can reconcile to the paper statements. Has anyone managed to do this? I’ve heard public sector accounting doesn’t use double entry book keeping but some other obscure method. Is this why I’m running into problems?

Can't you get them to do it for you? I though "tax doesn't have to be taxing". Just bloody expensive ...

Yep, ring Adam Hart-Davis and ask him to sort it out

Or get a book-keeper, about £200 pa.

Bugger, that's just reminded me - I've not got a self-assessment form this year. Thanks for the reminder (and apologies for the slight hi-jack).
