Just thought I would share with my fellow Pistonheaders what happended to me last night.

I live in a apartment block overlooking one of two railway stations in the centre of Bradford. Last night at approx 6.45 pm, came a very sturn knock on the door. After opening said door, was presented with two large BiB, who proceeded to advise me that there was a potential bomb scare at the railway station & that I, along with all the other residents in the complex, would have to vacate immediatly to a nearby hotel.

Q mass hysteria ? People screaming in the corridors ? Women & children first ? Shouts of unfair stop & searche policies ? Erm, no. What actually happened in response to this potential terrorist atrocity is that we all gently sauntered to the hotel, arranged ourselves in the bar & proceeded to get blotto whilst discussing amongst ourselves (& to be fair & despite living in the same complex, none of the residents actually knew each other to any great degree)the relative merits of Liverpools attacking display in their Champions League qualifier, the cost of petrol, the absurdly loud cufflinks I was wearing etc etc.

Whilst I do not wish to appear unduly jingoistic, I feel that this, albeit limited episode, perfectly epitomises as to exactly why such terrorist activity as recently carried out in London will not under any circumstances sway the British public or diminish their resolve in the continuing fight against terrorism, be it occasioned by foreign nationals or deluded members of our own Society.

So the end result of this bomb scare, this attempt to remove our hard won freedoms, to blackmail Society into withdrawing from Iraq, to pound us into submission, is that the takings in a bar increased, I learnt a few overdue fashion tips on male accesories & we all decided that we could do Raffael Benitsez job better than him. Oh & that the residents of my complex will from now on say "hello" whilst passing each other in the foyer.

Oh & even managed to get the mobile number of the waitress who served us in the bar as well. Result !!

Brought quite a lump to my throat at the end of the night (or was that merely the sandwiches the hotel kindly put out for us FOC ?).

That sounds very much like Bradford - they are used to bomb threats up there

Sounds like a plot by the hotel to drum up business for the bar...

FOrster Sq or the Interchange? Midland or Victoria bar? (this will probably show how long it is since I was in Bradford)

Given you appear to be a bloke, MILF, do the letters mean somehting other than the usual meaning?

Zod. Was Forster Square & was Midland Hotel on Manor Row.

As for the nickname, can do no more than advise that I was very young, was a cold wintry night & my best mates mother was VERY concerned as to my well being. Happy days.

It's a tragic sign of todays ed-up times that you had to prefix that statement with 'Whilst I do not wish to appear unduly jingoistic', just in case somebody got upset about it.

Nothing personal but we are turning into a nation of apologists, apologising in advance for no reason and generally putting every other interest ahead of our own - while they laugh and carry on trampling on us.

simpo two.

No offence taken mate, your quite correct. I ***** love this Country of ours, its idiosyncracies, its people, its scenery, its history & its entire contribution to the planet, which is entirely out of proprtion to its size or population.

Right, anyone who reads the Guardian want to argue with that !!
