I contacted with my local dealer yesterday about ordering a new 911 Carrera 4S Cabriolet, but he tells me that Porsche are currently only building GTS variants of the 911.

He's quoted me a lead time on a GTS of circa 9 months, with a 4S being in the region of 15 months, possibly even longer!

He says the reason he can't say for sure on the 4S is because Porsche have stopped building them - Has anyone else heard the same?

Yes. They have stopped/greatly reduced production on std and S models to concentrate on GTS models only. I was told not much chance of an S until late 2023 or even into 2024 when the 992.2 will be released.
I had already ordered a GTS with them so it was not like they were trying to sell me a more expensive model.

Thanks for that Corky.

That's pretty much "word for word" what I was told, and I'm in a different part of the country to you, so there must be something in it.

The trouble is, unlike most people, I'm not a great fan of all the dark accents and more aggressive look of the GTS (of course we're all different, no right or wrong etc), then to pay a premium for it, just doesn't sit right for me.

I suppose the other option is, I pay my deposit and wait for potentially the Gen 2.

Does anyone know when the Gen 2 is likely to happen?

Porsche are making more money than ever with the line up they have the electric division , macan , upcoming boxters ( even if sold in very small numbers comparatively ), it is more cost efficient to lets say share platforms and concentrate where the money is
The EU are going electric to one degree or the other , or better put the politics and peoples vote will decide
So I guess ICE 911 will be not produced in the manner we once had
The next 992.2 will have a variation of some for of hybrid , already alluded to in the press and I don’t think Porsche will lose any money by delaying the production of various 911 models . People will go for this
In summary Ukraine issues , Gas issues , Transport issues , Material issues , hey throw in Brexit too for the UK market — its a melting pot that will be used to justify a whole manner of things
If you are lucky to get a build slot for a 911 take it , and enjoy the car even if you prefer a different look to the GTS . 992 GTS I am sure anyone of us will be happy with it

Thanks Charlie and 991992

I can change the spec to be closer to what I want, but I'm probably paying an unnecessary premium for it.

That said, all the things you both mention are very true and unlikely to get better, so don't think I have much choice.

Thanks again for your comments.

Gen 2 what be with until the end of next year.

Residually you are better of with the GTS, therefore it won't cost you a premium.

You pays your money you takes your choice.

Thank you Corkys, that's good to know.

i've prepared a spec, but I'm personally not a huge fan of the black wheels and Race-Tex interior, so I've switched to silver wheels and Bordeaux / Black leather (either Crayon or GT Silver paint TBC). The salesman said I shouldn't change it too much, as it'll lose it's GTS identity and may effect resale.

I'm not that bothered, but I don't want to kill the resale value - Does my spec sound like it makes the GTS too far removed?

If you read the GTS thread you will see quite a few have changed there spec from the std GTS spec. You can get there centre lock wheels either repainted or diamond cut like the Turbo S ones, therefore keeping it more like a GTS spec car.
Just enjoy it
When I spoke to the salesman he was telling me about a larger framed customer that ordered a Turbo S but he wanted the lesser sport seat instead of the sport seat plus ones as he found them more comfortable, when I commented about residuals he said there will always be someone out there in the future that will want the same. Buy the car you like.
