Sorry folks I watch all the races but don't keep up with technical changes or the various programmes around F1 so I dare say this has been covered elsewhere...

This year there have been many car changes but 3 are really obvious to a novice like me, can anyone explain why these changes were made? -

1 - The wheels now seem to have a wheel cover over them (on the outside where the wheel nut is). All the teams have them, all black, and none that I recall had any advertising etc on. What's the point of them, why were they introduced, are they part of the brakes or an aero feature? Assume rule related as all teams have them.

2 - The front wheels have a skinny "mud guard" over the top of them. Again why? All teams have them.

3 - The front wing end plates all now seem to follow the same much more robust form. Presumably to prevent endless bits of carbon being scattered over the track. But was this a rule change that all teams have to have the same form? Are they made of aluminimium rather than carbon to avoid puncture inducing debris? Again curious why this change.

Many thanks.

1. It's a spec part all teams have to run the same one and it is supplied by Red Bull. Its part of the new aero to help control the aero outwash from the wheels IIRC. Some have some form of graphic on them, see the McLaren and Alfa Romeo as examples.

2. All have to have them, it is to help control air flow from the front wheels now they no longer have a wide front wing and bargeboards to help control the air flow. I cant remember if this is a spec part or not.

3. I think there is a defined shape for endplates they have to roughly adhere too, it's part of the front wings being narrower and again to help control air flow.
