What is BHX like these days?

Parking is extortionate for the shorter stays and pick up/drop off. If you are parking long stay then book in advance for the best prices.
As above, fast track through security is well worth it.
Avoid early morning clashes with the large flights going to the key holiday destinations if you can. Most business flights tend to be a little later in the day and the airport has quietened down.

Thanks, so the usual early AM rush. I try to avoid those anyway
If I am travelling for less than a week then I use the International Rail Station car park. Cheaper and faster to get into/park than the airport car parks, then the monorail is right there. Taxi outbound, Uber inbound for longer trips.

The queues at Birmingham and Manchester are variable.
I flew out of Birmingham this morning at 08.00am and the queue for security was the longest I've seen it since pre-pandemic - thank god for fastrack. The problem is that not enough of the security lanes were open.
Having read the bad stories about the queues and delays at Manchester, I bought a fastrack passport control ticket for my return on a Friday night three weeks ago, expecting the worst, and just walked straight through - no queue at all.
One thing I will say is that NCP are a bunch of scammers. I always pre-book for short-stay at both airports - no problems on arrival but the barrier never goes up for me on exit and I have to call an operator. I'm convinced that they hope you will cave-in and just pay-up, especially if there are other cars waiting behind.
Bot airports are dirty dumps when compared to other European airports I get to experience.
