Venues in Florida

I’m off to Orlando mid-May and was thinking of trying to get myself to some sort of good ol’ American racing event.

Nothing’s happening at Sebring or Daytona when I’m there. Does anyone know of any other venues that might have something on, whether it be drag racing, stock cars or whatever? I imagined there being loads of grass-roots racing about, but google doesn’t suggest much.

12 hours of Sebring was yesterday funny enough. Seems I shared a flight home with 5 or so of the drivers there was Harry Tincknell and Seb Priaulx not really related but as close to a claim to fame as I've ever really got

It might be of interest but they do a Saturday night classic car show in Old Town Kissimmee, A real mix of American modern and old school. Fantastic location too.

Orlando Speedworld, which is out on SR50 east of Orlando is a great venue for 1/4 mile drag racing and roundy-roundy stuff too.
It's located in a place called Bithlo, which is between Orlando and the small town of Christmas FL. Bithlo is not called "The Nightmare Before Christmas" for nothing, so you might want to get the hell out of Dodge, when the racing ends (invariably quite late at night). The quality of machinery there is very impressive though.

Also check out Auburndale Speedway, in Winter Haven (half-way between Orlando and Tampa). Another good facility that is friendly and fun. They do some crazy/wacky stuff there too - figure eight, school bus races and even caravan racing.

If you are looking for a proper 'hokey' motorsports experience, look at Showtime Speedway in Pinellas Park (Clearwater FL). Very grass-roots, basic and a bit hi'billy, but what amateur racing is all about.

Thanks again for all your suggestions. We ended up at Auburndale Speedway last night for a slice of all-American entertainment. The night kicked off with the national anthem, a quick blast of Proud to Be an American and plenty of whooping.

Some of the cars were genuinely spectacular, although I’m still not convinced that oval racing is much less dull than dishwater. Nonetheless, it was all exactly as I’d hoped and I’ll be back.
