This week will likely see the start of the full destruction of Kyiv by Russian artillery.
A beautiful and historic city laid waste. It’s citizens bombed to death.

And what use is the UN? It’s never been of any use and this proves yet again that it’s a pointless organisation with pointless rules and regulations.

Bin Laden didn’t even bother bombing it.

Should it be scrapped and a new organisation take its place? An organisation of democracies perhaps?
Where adherence to basic human rights has to be a joining criteria?

That's unfair, I'm sure they are working around the clock to pass a motion condemning Israel.

UN are, AIUI, a “clean up and sustain” organisation rather than a defensive organisation. Sounds like you want someone to go into Ukraine guns blazing and deal with the Russians in the way NATO can not.

Exactly this...the UN isn't a universal fight back type army.

Besides:
  • Non-proliferation of nuclear weapons treaty
  • International atomic energy agency inspections
  • Chemical weapons convention
  • Land mines convention
  • Yugoslavia/Rwanda/Cambodia genocide trials
  • Smallpox eradicated
  • CFC ban and the hole in the ozone layer going away again
  • Unicef
  • The World Bank helping fund projects in developing countries
  • The world meteorological organisation
and generally providing a framework for countries to discuss and resolve disagreements, what have the UN ever done for us?

The problem is the "some are more equal than others" nature of the permeant members of the security council

Already been a similar post RE: NATO. Any world police club needs Russia, China and the US either within or outside of it. If they're inside, they'll obstruct each others plans. If they're outside they become the organisations enemies.

So basically what we already have in the UN and NATO.

The UN's job is to stop security council members from going to war. Anything else is just getting global stuff done one the cheap like disease observation, natural science data or keeping troops in a country noone cares about.

We Did Nothing by Linda Polman is a good if depressing read on how useless UN peacekeeping works (or doesn't).
