At what point do we stop hurting the Russians, and start to cut our own limbs off with sanctions and anti-Russian hysteria?

News on the BBC just now: https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-kent-60619112

Unions are refusing to unload two Russian liquid gas carriers (with enough gas to supply the UK for 12 days - massive!), so they have gone elsewhere.

Russia may proactively cut off supplies at some point anyway, which will f*ck countries like Gemany, Spain and Italy, but should we be doing this to ourselves proactively?

Surely, the idea is for sanctions and actions that hurt Russia, make our point, but not 'sanction ourselves' so we get the direct blowback of the same sanctions ourselves?

There's a very long thread discussing the Ukraine situation and its consequences: https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

With the amount that Russia supplies to the rest of the world in basic resources, any sanctions are going to effect us quite quickly.

The question is how comfortable we are with dealing with autocratic despots to make our lives easier. Historically the answer has been quite.

I think the expression you're looking for is 'cutting off your nose to spite your face'.

That too, I think both metaphors are quite apt! smile

I'm a "pull the plaster off quickly" sort of person.

Short term pain is better than a long term drawn out process.

fk Russia, and the horse they rode in on.

Lets find a different way to do things that don't involve buying off murdering warmongering bd regimes, while were at it lets look at other places that supply us that have problems with how they treat other people. wean ourselves off their stuff too.

Good idea, but you can't sort it out in a week. And a gas shortfall because someone won't unload a cargo will hurt us far more than it bothers Putin.

People wind themselves up into doing all sorts of reactive stuff without considering the effects.

The strongest sanctions are always going to hit more than the target nation. That's why they are left til last.

Relying on Russia for gas has always been a risky strategy and hopefully this is the end of it.

Funny, isn't it? Russia finance our Green movement who ensure that we can't produce gas from shale wells, pursue expensive and non-base load wind, and won't support reliable nuclear energy. The enemy within, that's the Greens.

+1

Blockading your own ports is not a good strategy.

Jumping the shark is reference to Arthur Fonzarelli, not sure how much help he'd be on this one.
