I’ve just had a moment of clarity
Discussion
I have been an F1 fan for ~33 plus years. I don’t remember when I first started watching, but I was at the 1989 British Grand Prix at the tender age of 14.
And from pretty much then, I could tell you the date of the opening race of the season, because I’d be gagging for it.
2022, I know the opening race is in Bahrain. Date? Nope. What’s more of a problem for F1, I am not sure I care.

Late 89s and early 90s was when I when I started watching and have followed pretty faithfully since then. After the st show at the end of last season which made me feel I had wasted my time over the rest of the season (plus avoiding spoilers, staying up late, etc) means I am simply not bothering this year
I will probably end up catching the odd race but watching quali and every race isn’t for me anymore
You are more aware than me though as I couldn’t have even told you where the first race was going to be

Me and my dad said the same to each other today. I know it’s starting soonish but I’m just not bothered at all even though I was looking forward to the new cars I’m just not interested. I started watching at roughly the same age as you around 1999. The farce of last season has killed it. Last season's mishandling deserves to have the sport lose fans imo. Although the sport could potentially make up for it this season.
The logical part of me says to watch this season, if only to see whether or not the FIA have learned their own lessons about such stark manipulation not being acceptable to fans. I'll watch, I'll keep fingers crossed.
If there's any continuing signs of manipulation, even a hint... I think at very least be lost as a viewer for the rest of the season and probably remain absent until I hear people praising the quality of the sport again.
As of right now, it's in the sports hands to get this season right, or repeat the same mistakes. I also think they'd be wise to offer the first couple of GP's free to view to recapture as much of the on the fence audience as possible.

Not alone neither I'm a avid F1 fan but even with the new cars can't really get excited about this year and the toxicity still with fans on social media is hurting it a lot ATM for me you can't read anything without usual max is a paper champion Hamilton is a cry baby or what I have seen recently is the Hamilton haters go after George.
Still watch the first race whatever date it is on hopefully when the racing starts the excitement will come back but for know it's very meh for me.

I will watch, but I will not be doing my usual routines of being very careful not to see any spoilers before I watch.
I have, in the past, had to endure being sat with fking nazis, got international sports events in places like Khaosan Road, Bangkok to change channel, etc... I have never completely missed an event, even with power cuts, floods, etc.
Now, I'm just a bit "meh"... We will see...

I think I've gone the other way this season.
I felt pretty flat - and fairly annoyed - after the events of Abu Dhabi too. And I've been following F1 for a similar amount of time, first thing I really remember is Mansell's tyre exploding in Adelaide (although any time I read the words "René Arnoux" I hear them in Murray's excitable voice). The Abu Dhabi race was a new all time low for a sport - and governing body - that never ceases to frustrate me by shooting itself in the foot in inventively stupid ways.
I wasn't sure how I'd feel about this season. But the new car reveals have genuinely excited me, I've watched the excellent Kyle.Engineers analyses on YouTube, and followed testing more intently than ever before.
I noticed over the weekend that they were still advertising tickets for Bahrain. A quick search later and I found a very reasonably priced package deal. It'll be the first race I've attended since the first Valencia race in 2008. I'm going with the full knowledge that I could see someone's first win - Russell, Norris, and Sainz all have a great chance. The last time I was this excited was 2009 when Brawn looked like pulling off something a bit special.
All you can do right now is hope and trust that this time, the screw up last year was so severe that the FIA have a will to never see anything like it happen again.

I used to be able to tell you every single driver on the grid from the design of their helmet. I even wrote off to 'You Bet' but never heard back form them.
Couldn't do that now.
But like the OP, my intimate knowledge of F1 stuff has waned but I think that's just a case of having a lot more things in your head.
At 14, for me, the contents of my brain consisted of girls and F1.

I will be listening to all the practice. I'll be tuning in well before qualifying. We've already made plans for me to go to my mate's house to watch the race.
This is not just another F1 season, this is the beginning of a new regs era- and I want to be in at ground level on the form book and competitive developments.
It's as big or bigger a regs change than 2014 and I was hyped for that too. If 2015-2018 didn't put me off F1, Abu Dhabi 2021 certainly won't.
ETA: Also, this isn't like other regs changes. This is a holistic, clean sheet rules revolution, a complete philosophical change masterminded over several years by a team led by Ross Brawn, which aims to resolve the one issue which has affected Grand Prix racing for all the years I have been watching.

I'll have a look at it this weekend (unless someone else wants to take it on). I haven't got around to updating it because, like others in this thread, my motivation for F1 at the moment is at rock bottom.https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

I have been following testing, more out of interest in the engineering challenge of the news cars. This is not just another F1 season, this is the beginning of a new regs era- and I want to be in at ground level on the form book and competitive developments.

On the subject of testing, F1 seemed to have managed to cock that up as well, I thought it was a ‘shakedown’ and behind closed doors, but apart from the lack of a 30 minute Sky TV coverage in the evening, I can’t see a difference.
My initial thought on this thread was what the heck, new regs, cars able to follow each other, exciting season ahead.
Now I've pondered it deeply. I agree with OP. I've long criticised the lack of competition from the sporting point of view, but at least it was usually a sport.
Now, even if it turns out to be an exciting season (4 drivers battling?), the thought will always be there that for the time we invest watching it, the last race will be screwed up and we will get a nonsense ending.

I think the big issue is that a lot of F1 fans are only that, F1, they might like cars, so might do a Goodwood FoS or something aswell, but they may be do not go and watch club racing, BTCC, so they know no different, to them it is a bit like the Olympics, Wimbledon, 6 Nations something to get into for a short time every year then move on. The sport capitalises on this with ticket prices etc as it its priced to compete with elite sports like that.
What last year showed is that the fan who religiously watches might not anymore, that would worry me as a rights older, because they buy apps, PPV, buy merch etc.

Poster above nailed it for me regarding the fan toxicity (on both sides) I’ve avoided pretty much anything f1 related on any kind of media as a result, as to be honest quite quickly in the aftermath of Abu Dhabi I just found it all frustrating and draining to read.
I also feel that as the calendar grows ever bigger my engagement gets a little less, used to record and watch all fp1, 2 and 3 sessions along with quali and the race including buildup and discussion afterwards but nowadays I’ll do my best to see the live qualifying and race but little else. Just don’t have the time available to dedicate and as a result I know less of the politics and dealings going on behind the scenes.
Also much preferred the c4 coverage when they had a decent number of live races, sky just seem to have a massive line up of ex drivers quite often contributing very little imo.
