This will sound like a stupid question, but please indulge me!

Long story short, I recently had an engine rebuild done on a 2003 Impreza WRX wagon, and after a few miles checked the dipstick and found it dry. Put nearly 2l in to get it back to the 'F' line, and since then the level stayed steady and the car ran fine. Then did an oil and filter change yesterday, and drained nearly 6l out of the car. Put on the new filter etc. and topped up with 4.5l fresh oil, nothing on the dipstick. Added another 1/2l for good measure, still nothing.

I'm on level ground, and have tried reading it cold, after a run, after leaving it for 20-30 mins after a run, with the dipstick in various orientations, etc etc. as I know Imprezas have a reputation for being difficult to get a consistent reading. But every time the stick has been dry. I've checked part numbers with the guy who did the rebuild and it has the correct sump, so the only thing I can think is that the dipstick is too short. I measured it this morning and it runs 435mm from end to end, including the yellow plastic, but looking on a few forums I think it should be closer to 520mm.

If any Blob WRX owners could please check their dipstick and make sure I'm not losing my marbles? Classics as well, as looking at fleabay listings I think that may be the stick I have instead. Not sure what else it could be!

on my Fsti’s , i have standard sumps one stick longer than the other , was your sump changed ? some sumps are deeper , i had a standard sump leak , got it changed dip stick a different length v standard , oil change time standard cars again one takes 5 litres one is 4.2 , if you do ever overfill by a few hundred mills it looks like it’s way too full , the best way to check oil , take it for a run , get it fully warmed up , park on flat ground , check it 10 mins later and that’s what oil level you have , i keep mine on the hot notch which is over the max line , has engine builder put the correct dip stick back in your car , but as above worth asking if it’s a new sump , as over time they do rust and fail

It is a new sump, but checked part numbers with Tim Farmer who did the rebuild and it's definitely the right one for the car.

The stick must be the issue, as 52cm is what I've been told by a couple of different people for the WRX. Mine is 43.5cm end to end. No idea where the shorter stick may have come from (classic or a non-turbo maybe?), but in any case it's the wrong one! Luckily a new one is pretty cheap, so shall buy myself a correctly-sized dipstick and hopefully shall be able to get an accurate reading.
