Morning all.

The power steering pump on my 2008 2.5i Auto Subaru Outback is on its way out. New ones were very expensive and also quite difficult to get, so I went with a used one and it arrived with the cable hanging off my a thread and my local garage have said they can't fit it. Is this connector in the photo captive. As in, you can't remove it? The Parts supplier are saying it can be and putting up a bit of a fight.

In the same vein, can anyone recommend a Subaru parts specialist? The internet is throwing up used ones from Hong Kong or new units at anything from £400-600

are you sure it’s the pump , on the foresters the hose goes hard let’s air in and makes the noise , have you a few different photos of the pump , i’m surprised if they are not shared by other models , there are a few places on line that rebuild ps pumps , the wire on it any idea what it does as most pumps i’ve seen have been purely mechanical , i use megazip or partsouq

Thanks for the response.

Hmmm. I hadn't considered hoses to be an issue. The garage expressed some concern that the pulley was bent and that could have damaged the bearing and the pulley could eventually come off or worse the belt.

Yeah, I think the pump is shared with other Subarus. However, this is not the first time I have had issues sourcing spares for this car frown

Hi Bakerstreet, from memory the wire you are talking about earths a part of the engine ECU to raise idle speed a little bit so the engine doesn't stall or bog down, when the steering is operated, the car can be used without the wire connected, but may bring up an engine fault code, the AC also has the same and raises idle speed when AC is in operation.

I believe the pulley can be swapped from pump to pump, if they are the same make of pump they can be stripped down and you could make 1 good pump from the parts of 2.

Hope this helps.

Hi did you manage to solve this?

Import car parts have this one https://www.importcarparts.co.uk/parts-info?id=140...

Have you tried searching the part number on Partsouq and then searching the part number on line?

Also when you say issues , what issues, there is an o ring that fails and allows air in, my JDM twinscroll had this, new pump £500, o ring £5, changed the O ring and bled the system and its been fine for 2 years now.

Many parts do swop over , the PS pump on my car is shared with many imprezzas for example, so its worth getting the part number from Partsouq.
