Anyone bought at auction before - BCA aim particular?

Looking to bid on something. I know cars ok but not a proper mechanic.

Am I able to view the service history prior to bidding / sitting in the car etc?
Car is a low mileage BMW M4. Condition report says all good, and minor chips on bumper.

How thoroughly can I check the car before bidding?

Any other advice apart from setting a bid limit and sticking to it no matter what?

Unfortunately you cannot currently purchase from BCA as a non trader.

Because you're a "punter". The idea that you should have access to vehicles at the same prices as traders.,...well that would never do would it?

Do a man out of a job that would!!

Its the same racket as building materials basically. rolleyes

Saying that… I assume you have your own used car garage? Would u potentially buy a car without me guaranteeing to buy, until I’ve viewed and driven a car? And of course I’m guessing you’d want to make a profit on it too. But all depends on how much the car gets bidded upto. I have a feeling with the profit you’d want to take, it might not be worth it?

Let me know your details… the car is up tomoz at 4pm in Manchester

A mate of mine has a trade account but you don't get to see any history until you've bought it.

I wouldn't fancy buying an M4 that way!

Yep, its all a conspiracy. Its not like "punters" off the road want to do something like bid on a random £40,000 BMW M4 from an auction in Manchester, but won't want to pay for it until they've test driven it and seen the service history. Oh... wait scratchchin

BCA shift 15,000+ cars a week and will be taking well into six digits worth of revenue every 30 seconds or so the lines are running. Many of which these pounds will be going on unpreped cars in both cosmetic and mechanical issues far short of the expectations of the average "punter" often on the basis of sold as seen, or something very close to it.

They don't want to deal with people that are going to change their minds and ghost on the deal, or try and haggle a bit more off "for cash", or decide that it actually has a small scratch on the bumper that wasn't on the report so they want a refund. Even with an "assured" report do you think any mechanical claim outside of few days of collection is going to be met with anything other than a "And what do you want us to do about it" from BCA?

They don't have the time or the inclination to deal with people that want test drives or to paw through service history before cash comes out. They want their money and then they want that car GONE no matter what, and they will quite gladly charge you and take legal action to recoup their loses if you mess them around.

Yeh - no I get that from their perspective - but surely punters who actually buy at auctions know what they are getting themselves into. Bought at own risk - and we have the condition reports from BCA - so assuming they are accurate - I dont get why they would stop people who know cars but aren't in the trade from buying.

I guess my only gripe would be not being able to view car - surely even garages would prefer seeing the car before bidding.

Anyway it is what it is... just annoying when simple st like becomes complex because the sheeple don't understand buying at auction, and the people running the show just block everyone unless you're part of the industry.

Another person here who would gladly buy from auctions on their terms.

Without access to auctions the private buyer is massively restricted in their ability to source.

As others have said - these are all just conditions of sale. So what? You either accept them or you don't.

As much as I'd love to gain access to auctions I can totally see it from BCA's perspective. Why expose yourself to a world of pain? Consumers are given certain rights and privileges under the law that aren't covered in trade contracts. You only need to observe how many 'I bought a lemon - what are my rights' type threads on social media to know that most punters can't be trusted to understand or stick to the rules.

I've always wondered how BCA have got away with selling cars to the public the way they have done.

After all, they're a business selling cars to consumers. They have welcomed private buyers.

The consumer/private buyer drives away from BCA in an unchecked car, and BCA seems immune if said car has defective brakes for example?

Why should they be exempt from SOG act, and buyers consumer rights?

They SHOULD be trade only selling the way they do.

yeh but BCA have an appraisal system - the moment you take car out of their site - buyer has 48 hours / 500 miles to raise an issue - for any issues not highlighted on the reports.

Of course BCA free to do as they please - but it just means they few people who decided to educate themselves on without being in the trade loose out on a deal because the consumers are treating an auction like a proper retailer - when clearly it isn't.

Anyway I suppose all enthusiast cars are shifting to Collecting Cars where consumers can buy - but they usually sell at a higher premium in general anyway. And they're doing it without issue.

I'm in the trade and I don't buy from BCA - the trade groups I'm in are full of Traders moaning about the poor descriptions, additional damage etc and very few get any money back

It's just accepted that a percentage are not as described

If you need to buy 5 / 10 / 50+ cars a week you just have to accept it

Here's a couple of quotes from a Trade group

Heads up on this one people - BCA Derby today - I had this a few months back and had to back it as it’s had a mega smack.
They have taken the assured off it, has drive train light on, brakes are knackered and also has electrical issues with locking and rear lights - They do know all this!

Personally I refuse to deal with the enemy in BCA and I would hope a few dealers might start to see the light and cancel their accounts

Today’s BCA buying...You can actually buy a lower mileage, identical spec car from a Mercedes main dealer (delivered to your door) for the same money

Unless you need volume - you're not missing much

That's similar to my trader mate with a BCA account's experience. The last few times he has been helping people out finding cars he has found them cheaper via classifieds than the prices BCA get.

So you dont want to buy a car as a trader, you bid to buy
