check out the 996 forum on rennlist,,,there are a few threads on this,,,,i have an 02 C2 and for £2k,you can keep it...I like the current noise,,have heard they get louder after a few k miles on standard...from reading posts, there is no discernable diff in power,,,,seems like on a new car you have to go with official exhaust rather than after market so that you keep the manufacturers warranty.

I'm planning to get the Porsche sports exhaust fitted in the VERY near future - however, my car's a '99 model 996.

I've done loads of research on Rennlist (and here) and the concensus seems to be that the '02 996's have more sporty sounding standard exhausts than prior years. Your exhaust will also get louder (a bit) with a few k miles. I suggest you hear a '02 sports exhaust before you buy one!

i heard a 3.6L with sports exhaust and it was lovely and growly.

for an earlier 996 i can reccomend the fabspeed exhausts from 911 design. it was really well made from stainless steel, about 25kgs lighter and made it sound like one of the earlier air cooled cars. well worth £700.
