We desperately need to follow the lead of the EU and UK by introducing speed limiters.
This madness has to end.

But it would limit the damage caused.

My first thought was some nutter with a gun, so I suspect it was a tongue-in-cheek comment when people call for gun control when a nutter shoots people.

Ah, so he's an American trying to be....well I don't know what he's trying to be with that post actually. Very odd.

Horrible story. Also, "police say a Dodge Challenger ran a red light".

Jumping to conclusions.
Born in Epsom a very long time ago (1953), emigrated to the US in 1996. So I'm now from both sides of the pond. biggrin

We have speed limiters in the UK? confused

Maybe on HGVs and some brands limiting their cars to 'only' 155mph.

Horrendous crash and scenes for responders to deal with.

Maybe a flippant comment there from me. A speed limiter might limit the spread of the destruction but have the same outcome.

What would your proposed limit be?

Jap import cars 'limited' to 112mph
A lot of cars 'limited' to 155mph
Some with the limiter raised to 174mph
and big bikes are 'limited' to 186mph.

I've put 'limited' as each and every one can be bypassed by someone so, in theory, everyone could bypass if so desired.

Yep, the 56mph limiter here for lorries means that they never kill anyone, even when the driver's a lunatic running through red lights. At 56mph they are completely safe.

(And if the OP is on about the (override-able) limiters on new cars in the EU - well not being able to accidentally go over the speed limit means no one will ever run red lights or get distracted by their phone!)

Seriously though, the layout of a lot of junctions in the US is dodgy at best, it only takes a small mistake to cause a big crash - compare that to roundabouts where head-on collisions are practically impossible, and most crashes would be limited to 2 vehicles.

Interesting to see the NTSB are involved - IMHO that sort of thing would be very helpful in the UK, having at least a partially independent organisation investigating road crashes, and publishing the reports - there would be a lot to learn from reading them.

The fact that anyone can buy [or steal] a factory standard Challenger Redeye that has 800hp
under the hood is utterly car-aaazy yet peculiarly American and nowt new, as muscle
cars have been around for decades but we shouldn't forget the average eurobox E class or Audi 6
is good for 140+ mph and more than capable, in the hands of a lunatic going through a red light, of causing a multi car
pile up resulting in many deaths.

What speed limit would you suggest to reduce deaths to zero?

Will a speed limiter have stopped him running a red light too?

We really need to stop this kneejerk "we must reduce everyone's freedoms because of one lunatic's actions" nonsense. This happened once, 4,500 miles away. We don't even have that many traffic light controlled crossroads or even Dodge Challengers in this country, FFS.

It would also be useful if people realised that they are being manipulated by the media for their own agenda (more clicks for sensational news stories).

TLDR; Grow up.

Really? there were 3 times as many suicides in the UK last year as road deaths. I think that may be a better use of our time and resources.

Apparently the speed limiters being implemented can be over-ridden or disabled by pressing hard on the loud pedal though they re-engage everytime the vehicle is started. Apparently it uses haptic feedback to tell you to stop being naughty, probably feels like a foot massage.

This would not have prevented the incident the OP thinks it would.
