Renovo....are there alternatives...

:scratchchin: Just been conversing with a collegue who used to have a griff. He rainproofed his roof using B&Q Tent reproofer, and said it did as good a job as the previous time he renovo'ed the roof.

Got me thinking really, if I can avert £60 for renovo when a tenner will do the job why not?

Anyone else used other rainproofer?

I have heard of Thompsons water Seal being used! Never tried it myself, but heard it works well!

Autoglym did the trick for me.

Have used Fabsil and Autoglym, both do a good job of waterproofing but IMO the Autoglym does the better job especially when used with the fabric hood cleaner which brings the colour back superbly.

The down side top the Renovo stuff is that although it proofs the roof it does not cause water to bead off it, Thompsons does. Thompsons is also around £5 for 2 years supply.

I'd echo all of that. Thompsons water seal is both very good and very cheap. I usually recoat every 4 to 6 months.

I am just about to do my hood , but want to restore the colour as well as waterproofing , I know that Thompsons etc are great for proofing but are colorless Renovo is available in the colour of the hood..................isn't it ?

Thompson's Water Seal... ... cracking stuff. Keep applying until the waterseal runs off, and you're S will be as dry as a desert (mine was!).

Oh, and the added benefit of smells...

I used the Renovo 'dye' on the hood before I proofed it and I'm not that impressed by the results. Looked good as I was doing it but it has dried grey and is nowhere near the color of the panels which looks pretty crap when the roof is on. Short of getting a new hood anyone got any tips?

Renovo is actually 3 products, a shampoo, a dye then a proofer. You can use the first two then proof with Thompsons.

I use Fairy Liquid and a toothbrush to clean it, then Renovo to re-dye* and Thompsons to waterproof. Excellent :thumbup'


*For those who have got a non-Renovo coloured hood, I'm on the case. When I did my (black) hood with it recently it occurred to me that from the texture and smell, it's either the same or similar formulation to something else that I've used. I've started going round craft shops etc sniffing all the bottles and will report back when I track the stuff down and get someone with a green or red roof to test it.

Chris is spot on with the advice about cleaning it for best results, it's pretty important.

The renovo kit was a good buy at around £46 for cleaner, dye and water proofer and a bottle of scratch remover for the rear window.

The only problem I had was that a previous owner had used a seler on the roof that the renovo would not absorb into and the targa always looked a little patchy compared to the rear section which hadn't been treated previously.

Tim, I still have the kit if you want it there's a fair amount and will do an entire roof again ....I think. Let me know and we can arrange to meet up somewhere. I'll be back from the states this weekend.

Seeing as my car has been loafing in a field for 7 months I think I will buy the proper stuff to start with as the roof has faded somewhat so I think it needs some colour. HOW MUCH.

I would go for the Cleaner then the dye. I bought the large kit and it was more than enough to do my S3 with 4 coats and I've still got loads left.
