So i'm selling my car which has a private plate on it, i've just registered online to remove the plate from my car and to retain it until i get my new vehicle. Just need to go and get plates made up for the old number and shove that on my car. Once I get my new V5 im going to sell the car.

The new vehicle I'm purchasing is untaxed. I'm a bit confused as to how it all works. Do I apply to tax my vehicle and transfer my retained plate at the same time? If so, I can drive the vehicle immediately or do i need to wait for paperwork processing? I don't want to have a new car sitting on my drive that I cant use.

So my other question is can i tax the vehicle with the plate thats already on the car, then apply to transfer my private plate to it?

I'm so confused by all this. Please help frown

Tax the new car under the plate that is already on it.
Wait for new V5C in your name to arrive, then transfer on your private plate.
(Make sure the seller of your new car transfers the registered keeper to you via the online system, not by post).

You won’t be able to transfer the plate until you have the new cars v5 in your name.
If your buying from a garage I think they can do it though.

there is no situation where you wont be able to use the car.

Do the change of ownership and tax it online at the dealer when you collect it. You can then use it as normal. The V5 in your name will arrive in the post.

When you have the new V5 in your name, you can do the reg transfer online onto the new car, that takes effect immediately so you can put the plate on then.
MOT and tax get converted over automatically as part of this process so there is no need to do any of this. the only other thing you would have to do is notify your insurance of the plate change. the V5 with the new plate will arrive in the post
