I’ve always liked these but don’t see many out in the wild anymore. Used to be a regular sight at events and trackdays but less so now. I think the production numbers are 1868 total of which 308 were RHD. 106 were C16 U.K. spec (including 28 Clubsports).

According to how many left there are 96 registered with only 33 licensed. Presume this includes all 996.1 GT3s though, LHD and RHD?



That seems really low. I know a few have sadly been written off and lots seem to be in storage. Any owners on here use theirs regularly?

Mine is sorned for the winter.

I think those figures will include the LHD cars of which there will be a few.

Agreed that few are now seen at trackdays ... hasn't the GT4 taken over that role (also from the 964RS and 993RS ?)

You are probably right and I know the GT4 has for you! Do you still use the car much when the roads are clean? I'm keen to avoid the salt but a little water never hurt anyone.

In the last 12 months my LHD 996.1 CS has done two trackdays where it got to Snet and Bedford on a trailer and has moved from one storage place in Kent to another storage place in Central London under its own steam. It got a service in between, but again it was on a trailer to get there and back.

At 37k miles, any additional boring road usage is almost sacriligious...

Made the mistake of using it all year round for two years in the past, and while no damage was done, the once pristine underside will need dry ice blasting to be brought back to what it once was... Water is ok, but Winter grime is something else...

Mine is taxed and I’ll use it when the roads are dry through the winter.

My neighbour has one of the 28clubsport cars. Its silver and a uk rhd. He hardly ever uses it. I thought the folding buckets in my 981 spyder were cool but those seats in his 996 are epic!

They are easily the most comfortable bucket seats ever fitted to a car. Not the prettiest, but a triumph of design and functionality. Little wonder they sell for stupid money in the used parts market…

Very nice. Would be great to have one of the Clubsports, such lovely cars. I’ve been to view a couple over the years but both cars had some issues which I wasn’t comfortable with. I also missed a lovely yellow CS with K400 kit which would have been my perfect car!

The very same yellow K400 is tucked up in my garage awaiting it’s BBS LMs .( if they ever make it to these shores)

I live down a farm track which is very muddy when wet and once the roads have been salted it seems to hang around as a white mist for a long time when dry ... so I use it in Summer.

For the first time this autumn I sorned it ... and servicing and MOT are obvious costs, but it is a very special and lovely thing. It has a simple old-school feel with no frills but top quality and really built for purpose.

No electric mirrors, electric boot and engine cover, or fly by wire throttle .... and it feels like the clubsport seats are a bit narrower, rather like the 964RS NGT nomex seats were narrower than the leather seats in the lightweight ... ??

I stupidly sold mine to Paragon last summer, it sold within a week and I’ve not seen it anywhere since. It’s a fully sorted car so hope it’s being driven!

I believe that these cars will be seen by collectors as the equivalent of the 2.7RS ...

The '74 and '75 2.7 Carrera were essentially the same car as the 2.7RS comfort, but have no-where near the same collector value. They were even a better car with the cast aluminium rear suspension members, but the first is the first and the 996.1 GT3 was the car that homologated the GT3 Cup and R.

The CS was the RS of the day, as the R was the RSR.

There is a purity of purpose to every homologation special ... every one is a bit of a bitsa ! But they proved the market and the rest is history ... all IMHO of course ...

I do miss my CS 996.1
Full cage
had a couple sets of wheels so I could run semi slicks for track and Mich PS for daily use :-)
taught me a lot about the dynamics of the car - minimal aids

My LHD is on the road.

It gets out on clear days like today. Just coming up to 40k miles (after 18+ years of ownership).

Fits like a glove, can drive the pants off it, can use all the revs without getting to silly speeds.

I agree - I think the 996.1 CS will surpass many of the GT3s (actually all GT3s and most post 997 RS cars as well) that followed over time in value terms / appreciation.
They have gone up quite a bit already - just checked and the cheapest CS I saw on mobile.de is c 120k - about double of a few years ago and hardly any for sale. If I bought cars as investment (or plainly just had cash ...), then I would get one to drive a few k per year in sunny weather. One of the few cars I don’t think is overvalued atm

So the RHD 6.1 CS is the rarest GT3 of them all, including the RS?

Like so many cars now the value has gone up so much most are tucked up hardly used.
Such a pity the prices are over double when I had 2 996 GT3s
I would have another if I could only afford one.
Agree the CS is a rare beasts

Yes I would have my old Mk1 CS back. Perfect spec with the only real options being the leather dash top, climate and body coloured centre console.

Sold to Henry Slippy so that’s the same car above wearing BBS wheels and his Reg number.
