Absolutely massive story in Northern Ireland, ex Army Commander and UUP leader Doug Beattie was 13 points ahead in local election polls then someone did a bit of digging into his Twitter history and seems his political career is over. One joke basically accused a political opponents wife of being a prostitute.

And some of his other tweets some are quite funny at how casual misogynistic he is

I find it odd that someone would get into politics, let alone get to his level in politics, without scrubbing their social media.

Or does twitbookface keep all of this stuff, even if you delete it?

The UUP are supposed to be the moderate, 'small u' version of unionism, they have been progressive on such things as gay policies, abortion and brexit. Then their leader Doug comes out with this joke on Saturday, a very silly move that will hurt their chances of being the third largest party in Stormont.

Doug is an ex captian in the army with a military cross, I would have thought that a military education might have helped him in matters of decorum.

I'm not a UU supporter but did think he was good for the party. I'd never vote for him but was quietly supportive of his agenda. Very stupid of him and he knows it.

UUP aren't that moderate historically, but he is someone who realises they can't out DUP the DUP and there's a large if lazy unionist vote that will support more progressive politics. Getting them out is the problem and this won't help.

I'm not either but I was thinking of ranking them first on my vote, not sure now. I'm hoping that the DUP will get a real kicking this year but I doubt a SF first minister will make them think twice about the direction they are heading and will probably back them further into their self made corner.

I'd say if the youth could be persuaded to vote in any numbers the DUP would be destroyed.
