Out of interest, the legal costs of his libel victim were awarded. Given these costs are no longer recoverable, could the defence team seek to recover costs from their client?

My (unqualified) opinion is that it depends on the terms of the engagement. Hopefully someone well informed will be along to clarify.

This. It's not "poor Tommy", but "poor anybody who he owes money to". The odious sack of st truly has no shame.

Good way to do it though. Get divorced, give assets to ex, and become bankrupt.

Would HMRC approve of this? Apparently he owes them a few quid too.

BBC said:
He and his wife Jenna Lennon divorced in February last year, just before he declared himself bankrupt, and before he lost the libel case.

She owns a large detached house in Bedfordshire where there have been extensive building works over the autumn and winter, including the creation of a gym in the old double garage, and a games room above a new garage being built in the garden.

Robinson has been seen at the house talking to builders, sometimes with his ex-wife and sometimes alone, according to anti-fascism activists.

I could use all of the laughter emojis in the world for that story (but you can just imagine them instead). He's getting what he deserves. Odious prick.

But that's the point. He's not. He's the one laughing. He's declared bankruptcy, so his creditors get nothing. But his newly ex-wife gets to keep the house, the house that he is apparently still living in.

Odious prick indeed, but right now he's an odious prick that's getting away with it.

I’d be amazed, given that HMRC are owed money, if this isn’t dug into deeply. Any idea that he’s trying to swerve the law on this and he’ll be in more trouble than he can imagine.

Quite! It will probably be a drawn out affair though the courts but it's fairly apparent that the "divorce" was simply staged so that his assets are safe. It's similar in nature to suddenly creating a trust to hide your assets for the "benefit" of someone else. It's not for their benefit, obviously, it's for yours. The purpose of your actions are essentially fraudulent.

The Katie Price drink driving thread in SP&TL is making essentially the same points relating to her. She's bankrupt, has failed to pay successive fines handed out by the courts yet is living a highly extravagant lifestyle so clearly has assets or income from somewhere. No one seems to be getting what they're owed though!

I wonder if the BBC might throw him a lifeline.

They like sending bankrupt tax dodging celebrities on holiday to Barbados with mummy for a new Tv show.

Seems fairly standard stuff employed by countless trades businesses for example, take the money for work start the job ask for more money and then disappear go bankrupt and start up under new business name. Repeat and rinse.
