In a moment of bravery / rashness / madness Nicolei Zuraw and his girlfriend Sedef Imer have decided to go for a bike ride... to the other side of the world!
On 31 July 2005 Sunday, they will be setting off from Trafalgar Square to start their journey from London to Sydney. Their goal is to complete the trip in one year and raise £50,000 for Cancer Research UK and BBC Children In Need - £2 for every km on the way. They will cycle through 3 continents and 15 countries on their recumbent bikes (or 'bents', as they are affectionately known by owners). No trains, no buses, no hitching, no support vehicles. Only us...four wheels, strong determination... and the horizon!
‘Bents’ were chosen for the adventure on the basis that they are more comfortable over long distances. Nothing like travelling in comfort, Nicolei’s seating position is so laid back he could fall asleep on it! The study frames ensure that everything needed to sustain them on their trip could be securely loaded. A mere 30kgs of luggage, equipment and personal belongings each!
The Route:
Their route will take them through Europe on the old Roman roads to the heel of Italy where they will cross to Greece and into Turkey, the gateway of the East. Using the Roman Watling Road they will make their way towards the coast and cross into the top of France visiting some of the stages of the recent Tour de France, while still making their way towards Switzerland over the Jura mountains – the first of many gruelling climbs. Following the coastline of Lake Lausanne they will head towards the St Bernard’s Pass (2,469m) - the highest and oldest pass through the Alps where a long gradual descent awaits into Italy. The southwards through Turin, Genoa and along the North East coastline to the vertical tower of Pisa, Rome (for a well rewarded break) and ultimately the Brindisi to cross into Greece and into Turkey via Gallipoli. Heading Eastwards the Iranian Border through the the snow capped mountains of Eastern Turkey.
Once in Iran their route will take them to the Caspian Sea to sample the world famous caviar, then South East through Tehran and bandit territory to Pakistan. Once in Pakistan they have to travel North East into Islamabad to cross into India. In India they will stop at Agra to take Pudsey’s photo with the Taj Mahal, then head eastwards towards Calcutta and their second well deserved break.
Leaving Calcutta they will cross Bangladesh into Myanmar and Thailand. Then it’s Southbound through Malaysia and Singapore where they will island hope towards East Timor and the last boat ride of the trip into Darwin. A slight detour to Ayres Rock will take them to the middle of the Australian outback and then east towards the eastern coast to visit the Great Barrier Reef and then Sydney for a celebratory bottle of champagne at the Opera House.
