Last night I stayed at my girlfriend's house after a few beers at a party. This meant I had to commute to work this morning, rather than travel 'around the corner' (I live very close to the office).

Anyway, I took the bike last night so at 8:50 this morning I rumbled into the village to drop off my biking gear on the way to the office. I should also mention that the CEO lives in the same village, though a few streets away. He walked up to my desk this morning and said "Bit of a late one last night Dave? I heard you get home at 10minutes to 9 this morning!" I tried to make a joke by saying "That's not bad going - I didn't leave the party until 20minutes to 9!". The look on his face suggested that he thought I was serious, whereas in reality I was tucked up, drunk as a lord, by 2am ;)

As an aside, a 12mile ride on a sportsbike does wonders for clearing one's head!!

If you were honestly 'drunk as a lord' at 2am, and then back on your sportsbike at 8:30am then it's not a doorbell you need, it's a wake-up call.

OK, maybe badly phrased. I've always taken 'drunk as a lord' to mean closer to 'merry/tipsy' than 'passed out in a pool of my own vomit, surrounded by fellow Chavs'. I was merry, having had 4 pints of Carlsberg throughout the evening, though I stopped drinking at 11pm. The girlfriend and I were sat with friends until nearer 2am back at the house, chatting, but not drinking. I wouldn't drink heavily if I a)had to drive the next day or b)had to be at work by 9am. In fact, I can't remember the last time I drank more than 4 pints!

I was sat here at work by 9, fully capable of working and without a sniff of a hangover. By 'clearing my head' I meant in the 'my god, i dont usually have to get up this early!' kind of way. Besides, it wasn't meant to be a brag, just an amusing anecdote.

Know what you mean (self righteous mode off )

I used to drive a twin wheel axled V6 tranny van at work

Nothing better than at 6am giving it pasty on country roads - Certyainly cleared the head
Oh how I miss that overdrive button!

Hehe. Glad we've cleared that one up! The very thought of climbing onto a Sportsbike while drunk/hungover scares me! I strangely enjoyed riding to work, 20minutes on the roads which were strangely quiet (though aforementioned mode of transport meant congestion was not a problem!)

No worries. My phrasing left much to be desired!

Nice car BTW, there's a red hardtop one of those (Alfa SZ??) in Salisbury and it looks fantastic, but i've never seen a droptop version before.

Cheers - I think there's a few more now, but when I got mine it was the 12th or 13th RZ in the country.

There are more SZs about, and they are a (slightly) better drive, but roof down, early morning - pretty much the most fun you can have sober
