Just been out for a damn good thrash in the GT86. It's very very good on a wet British B road. There's a recipe for a good curry, and it's not always add more chilli.

Narrow tyres are huge fun.

The GR86 is going to be a legend/solution/classic.

What's a GR86?

Instead of the GT86 MK2 Toyota are aligning their branding following the GR Yaris and putting all their sporty models under the GR header.

It is going to be interesting to see if a lot of current GT86 owners want to upgrade, will there be a few more GT86s hitting the market.

Personally, I've always considered the styling, 2+2 and a usable boot of the Toyota far more desirable than a soft top of the mx5.

I’m waiting patiently to try the GR86.

It’s the only car making me hold off ordering a Golf R.

Leasing a Golf R.

With its sardonically apologetic little depressed face all lined with sporty eyeliner and fake vents. God what could be more depressing?

You want the local government county council of Saxony to build you a fun car in a world that also sees the South Korean squid game culture rustle up the i20 with seeming ease? Or those notorious funsters at Honda Japan give you an R type Civic?

You want Angela Merkels version of a hot hatch? Really?!

Will the GR86 have a better engine than the current one?

I've recently bought one of the last UK BRZs. I did think about waiting for the GR but tbh the current/older model has more than enough performance for me. Its just so much fun to drive with a decent level of practicality

I was cross shopping the MX5 and GT86 in August 2019, the GT86 is a much more "serious" feeling car but was completely and totally let down by having an engine that needs revs to deliver any power but likes revs about as much as a cement mixer full of gravel.

The engine choice for that car is completely baffling; the marketing claims for lower CoG for a flat engine don't stand up to analysis once you consider the exhaust manifolds underneath raising the engines mounting point in the car, it requires four cams and a more complex camdrive setup (might as well have a proper number of cylinders if you're messing around with two banks), it's really wide so they had to fit crappy McPherson struts to the front rather than proper sports car front suspension with some real adjustability, and the end result is an engine totally unsuited for life in a sports car anyway. It's even weirder when we know what pedigree Toyota have in making great engines vs Subaru who aside from turning the boost up to 11 in some of the halo models have always made extremely pedestrian engines.

I have no issue with 200bhp in a car of that size, weight, and nature, but not from that engine.

I loved the way it drove otherwise though, particularly how it was so perfectly set up for heel and toe shifts even an oaf like me could do it and get it right more often than not, something the ND2 MX5 I went for instead really isn't set up for.

I’ve never leased a car in my life lol.

Yeah and even better if I could afford it I’d be in an RS3 or A45s in bright metallic with blacked out rear windows and black alloys.

Cars are like food. You can like a curry as well as a steak. If you can’t see what’s great about both you missing out in life.

I’d say it more a sign of respect to the GR86 to be considered alongside a Golf R.

Strange really, I absolutely love the engine in my '86, it's a peach apart from the slight dip that everyone talks about.

I have a theory that a lot of these cars are tested on 95 instead of 99/super. HKS panel filter as my only mod, and it pulls lovely to 7k. A 2.0 producing 200bhp @7k, and 40mpg on a run - that's a great engine for me.

As for the OP, couldn't agree more, the '86 is a stunning car any time of the year, love it.

OP, I did see you have your name down for the new Emira?

I so nearly bought a GT86 but went with a Cayman instead. Mainly because I could. But deep down I know I preferred the drive of the GT86 and it certainly didn't feel underpowered. It felt just right. Needed to be worked hard but that was all part of the experience. If I could make the GR86 work with a dog I'd have one. And I might just do that!

I'm with you, mine is tuned slightly with a full exhaust and remap but the engine loves to rev and builds right at the top end making it a lovely thing to thrash around and enjoy. The torque dip is a niggle round town and for daily/motorway use but if your able to blast around and enjoy some b roads its never an issue. I do wish the noise was a more like an ae86 on throttle bodies although most things short of a singer 911 aren't particularly great sounding in recent years.

People who get it, really get it ah? smile

Sound, I don't hate it, but my ST182 Celica with a K&N induction sounded utterly glorious in comparison :heh:

I'm and ND2 owner seriously considering a GR86.

As fun/good as it is, really struggling to gel with my MX5. The whole ownership experience has been tainted by a few things, most recently my brother driving it into a small tree. Will probably change my mind come summer...
