Is 1999 MX5 supposed to have a “Check Engine” light?
I’ve tried one and the light didn’t show up when the key was turned (the other 3 lights did light up). It looks like there’s space for a 4-th light, as they would form a rectangle in the bottom center of the cluster.
I’ve looked at a bunch of 2001-2004 ones, and they all had 4 lights in there.

Off the top of my head I'd say yes, but I can check tomorrow when, hopefully, I'll get the car out of the garage.

I see you have also posted up on the OC so fingers crossed you may have a response before tomorrow.

Second gen has the engine check light in with the speedometer, it's immediately below the 'MPH'. If it doesn't come on when the ignition key is turned ready start, then it's either blown the bulb (unlikely but possible) or it's been removed or covered by an unscrupulous who can't be bothered to read the codes and fix the fault that's causing it to illuminate.

Would the "check engine" light below "MPH" be totally invisible when it's off?
I've pulled an image of a 1999 MX5 (it's not the same car as one I'm looking at, but I don't have access to it currently):

Yes it's virtually invisible until it's illuminated, looking at the battery light on your picture then looking at this one shows the difference well, the aftermarket white dials show where the engine check light is located under the MPH.

Well, I can report back that the check engine light doesn't illuminate. In the centre cluster it was just the battery, air bag and parking brake. Then there's the ABS in the rev counter dial, which is difficult to see in the photo below. Nothing lights up in the speedo dial.

Thank you for checking that, Claire.
I've actually test-drove another 1999 and a 2000 (with ABS), and they didn't have no "Check engine", nor a light under the speedometer (as Master Of Puppets suggested).
