I have bought an LG 65OLEDC14LB to replace a 12 years old Panasonic plasma. Main source will be Sky Q.

When the Pana was installed 12 years ago, the bog-standard 2m HDMI cables were threaded into conduits in the wall. Now that the new telly is going in, will these cables need to be replaced with something more up to date or will they work OK for HD/4K?

If I need new ones, what spec should I look for?

They'll be just fine.

For the sake of an extra tenner I’d get the latest spec cables.

12 year old ones will be HDMI 1.4 at best, which I don’t think will support 4K

You will need HDMI 2.1, the sky Q box will be supplied with a 2.1 cable

Not a 2m long one though - he needs it to go up the wall

I found this link https://www.tripplite.com/products/hdmi-cable-type... to be very helpful and informative when considering a replacement hdmi cable to suit a 4k device.

2.1 is the interface specification not the cable.

If the OP has high speed HDMI cables he will be fine. I have > 12 year old cables that work just fine with 4K.

OP try your existing cables first before spending any money.

Thanks, I'll probably do that. My concern was if the cables contained electronics like an iPhone charger cable, but it looks like it is just wires.

It costs nothing to try but older hdmi cables may not support the speeds needed for 4K. I just bought an Xbox series x and had to fit a high speed 3metre cable for it to switch to 4K. The old cable worked on 1080p but black screened on 4K. The new cable was only a £10 from wickes.

All working OK with original cables. I've also tried playing a 4k source from my laptop and that was fine too.
