I've just bought a late low mileage S1 Elise.I'm a very happy camper. The car still has the original P Zeros front and rear.
I reckon I will soon need a pair of front tyres. The rears are in good shape.
The OE tyres are now unavailable. Can anybody recommend what I should go for on the front? The Pirelli website is saying P6000's.

I wouldn't bother with Pirellis, there are much better alternatives around.

Firstly, you might want to consider poutting part worn P-zeros on the front and then changing the whole set as general consensus is that different tyres even on different axles is not such a good idea. Fronts are more common as the rears wear out faster. Alternatively you could replace the set and sell the rears on eBay.

Someone will turn up in a minute and say P-zeros are shite and you should bin them. IMO they are not that bad, great in the dry but not so in the wet.

If you decide to go for new, the choices are Toyo T-1 R, BF Goodrich G-Force Profiler (get the name right, there is another with a similar name) which I have, they seem very good these two can be had for £300 a set or less. Then you have the Lotus recommended Yokohama Advan Neova LTS (for LoTuS) which are over £400 a set.

Yes ditch the Pirelli's and stick on a full set of Toyo's which are great value for money.

Hey there.

I have a S1 Sport 160. The P-zeros are rubbish. Get some Bridgstone SO3's. The grip is unbelieveable and they just wont wear out. I give mine a lot of stick and they still look like new. I only have the SO3's on the rear at the moment but as soon as the front wear out, I'm getting the SO3's, no more understeer. Dont waste you money on the YOKO advants, they wear too fast. TOYO not bad, but again they wear quick.

I got 225 on the back of mine at £95 each, front at 195 can be found as cheap as £48 each fitted !! shop around. Try www.mytryes.co.uk

Er... No they aren't and yes they do!

Sorry Oly, have to stand up for the trusy P0, They are a good tyre and perfrom very well on the S1, particularly with uprated sus'. Yeh they are not the best on standing water but plenty of others are no better. The Bridgestone is also a very good tyre, however, with a treadwear rate of 220 it will not last as long as Toyo T1-R (280) when driven under the same conditions.

You are right that the Advans will wear more quickly than the others (tread wear rate 140). In theory you could get through 2 sets of Advans to one set of T1-Rs. That said, these tyres are are a list b1 motorsport tyre and are much stickier than any of the others mentioned. You don't get out for nowt!

My advice Alastair really depends on how you intend to use your car and how much money you have to spend.

If ultimate performance is key and you intend to track her then consider the Advan. you could also consider A048's but these are very track specific and you would ideally need uprated sus' to get the benefit.

For a cost effective all rounder look at either the Toyo T1R or the S03's, both good tyres for the money.

However, having said that, wait until your current rears actually need replacing, then replace all 4. Really P0's don't deserve their bad rep' but old P0's on the front and new boots on the back is not a good idea!

My problem is that the p0's for the front appear to be unavailable (unless someone knows different). My plan was to change the front pair and then next time go for a complete set of something else. My primary use is dry road, so i'm not looking for the ultimate track tyre

Hang on.

Let's get something straight here the Lotus recommended tyre is the Yokohama Advan Neova LTS, this is NOT a motorsport tyre, it is NOT List 1B, in fact it's not List anything. The MSA don't recognise it as it's not freely available, only via dealers. It is, however a fully treaded E marked tyre and was developed by Lotus and Yokohama for the S1 Elise.

Don't confuse this with the Yokohama Advan A048 which IS a motorsport tyre and IS List 1B only according to the MSA. Whilst great for trackdays and the like it;'s probably not the best for a new owner, particularly if you plan on using it every day.

The whole List 1A/1B is only relevant of you're looking at doing motorsport such as sprints in your Elise and most championships are allowing both List 1A and 1B tyres this year anyway.

For road use and the odd trackday stick with one of:

Toyo T-1 R
BF Goodrich G-Force Profiler
Yokohama Advan Neova LTS (dealer only)

These should all be in 195/50/R15 on the front and 225/45/R16 on the rear which is larger than the original tyres but is the recommended size.

The original post says that the car is on original tyres, the fronts should have more meat on them than the rears if anything, might be worth checking the wear is even on the front if they really are the originals.

Slightly snappy response Cuzza!

My mistake though. My understanding was that the Advan was 1b listed, I guess not.

However, my point was simply that the Advan is a more sticky tyre than the others and will wear more quickly.

I think my general advise was good but feel free to pick me up on irrelevant details and repeat the general content of my post if you must. (sarcasm mode off)

BF Goodrich G force profiler.

86,000 miles with crud P Zero.

Set of BF G's for £280 (same size as Advans). Advans best price at the time was £425 + Fitting about £465.

Grip is so much better than P-zero and in the wet they work too, not like P-zero.

Cost Co do Mitchelin and can order them in I gather. My S1 is used every day with no track days. Get a set of BF G's and put the P-zeros on ebay or bin em. Wish I had bought them sooner.

My reference point is only with P-zero's though.
