Rumour: Audi Buy McLaren group
Discussion
reported by autocar.
mentioned in the mclaren thread but i feel this has wider implications..
The end for Red Bull VW?
Will merc have a clause they can exercise to protect itself as i cant see them wanting to supply Audi with engines 2022 onwards
If a new engine is needed where from and how much impact will this have on 2022 car design which you'd assume is almost finalised.
st just got interesting!

I thought it was the Porsche brand of VAG that wanted to collaborate with RedBull? I suppose it's possible they could just use the Porsche engine but call it an Audi power unit.
The deal, as reported, would be wider than just the F1 team also giving Audi the automotive manufacturing and applied technologies group.

Quite surprised at this news.
The fact they have reportedly also bought McLaren cars, I’d find it hard to believe they would dilute the ‘brand’. I think the car division still needs the credibility the F1 connection brings.
If they’d just bought the F1 team out then it would seem like a wholesale rebrand was on the cards. I can’t see McLaren disappearing and suddenly becoming Audi F1. McLaren-Audi perhaps, but what engine?
Will Mercedes be happy their engine is now accessible to the Audi group… Porsche rumoured to be developing an engine.
Though is it not ‘VW group’ who have technically bought it? I’ve lost track a little bit of who controls the brands and spending power.
Not sure how up to date this pic is;

It's reasonably up to date, other than the fact that Volkswagen now owns 100% of Scania, MAN and Navistar. robscot said:

Journo's dream that, right?Click it and headline is now "McLaren Group denies being bought by Audi"

Start a rumour - run an 'excusive' article on it, loads of clicks, likes and shares.
Create such a stir that the company in question has to issue a public statement denying it.
Run an exclusive on the denial - loads of clicks, likes and shares.
So two giant stories out of literally nothing.
