There may be the odd occasion where I could us a roof top tent. However, I'm struggling to justify spending £1500 on one. Renting seems a good option although I can't find any near me in SW London/ Surrey? Someone mentioned getting a Chinese one from Alibaba for around £500 which looks tempting but there are of course risks attached with it arriving and quality etc. Any thoughts..

In general you pay for what you get.

Have you looked at the Jeep ones?

Doesn't Tentbox do a budget one?

ETA Oh! It's almost a grand.

We’ve got a Chinese one on the vee dub. It’s decent enough for the money £700 or so. Bit rough round the edges but it’s comfy and water proof.

Thanks, do you remember which Chinese site you bought from and how long it took etc?

I would recommend talking to Tuff Trek, 4x4 Overlander and APB Trading. 4x4 Overlander rent as well as sell, Tuff Trek may too. The Tentbox ones are a bit overpriced in my opinion, they have just spent a bit on marketing lately and the name has become quite well known. I’d be looking more at established brands that have been around longer.

TuffTrek,
Nakatanenga
Magiolina
ARB
Eezi Awn
Front Runner

Also, have a look at the quick erect ground tents from Oztent. More space and options if the weathers bad, no ladders to negotiate when you are drunk and need a pee and not much more effort to put up and pack down.

ETA Devon 4x4 worth a look too.

Hi only just spotted this, mine is from Ventura roof tents. Slightly chaotic but easy to deal with.

Did you ever get one? Big market for them here in Aus.
