I'm starting to feel that F1 really needs to have more than 20 cars on the grid. Drivers are starting in the sport younger than ever (excluding Max) and going longer as their fitness levels are higher and we're (thankfully) not seeing deaths like in the "good" old days.

It seems to me that F1 is in need of more cars on the grid to introduce more drivers.

Do you think it's wanted or even possible to introduce additional cars to the series?

Or would the lack of space in some of the pits, cost of running a third car etc etc make this unviable?

For me a couple more teams wouldn’t go amiss. Now the budget cap is in place perhaps more people are going to be tempted. Maybe lotus will have another pop or virgin.

Not a chance, Liberty won't allow in any teams that don't have huge financial backing, short of VW or one of the other major manufacturers entering the only chance of larger grids are if the existing teams are allowed to run more than 2 cars...

Had the budget restrictions Mosely promised been implemented then there would now be at least four more cars on the grid.

That said, 20, feels about right to me.

There is I think an argument for something else between F2 and F1, quite what I don't know.

It's absolutely possible to add more cars to the grid - pit facilities are there, there's engine suppliers (Renault only provide for their own team) available.

Grids used to have mid-20's in terms of numbers. In the 80s, some teams had to go through pre-qualifying to get to main qualifying as there were too many teams.

Nowadays it's all a lot more professional, as it should be, but I think at least 1 more team, maybe 2 would work.

Sadly, the cost is so high and the entry requirements so restrictive, I think it's unlikely in the near future.

Sadly the latest Concorde agreement has a $200m entry fee, to a new team wanting to join the grid. Put there of course by the existing teams, to give their entries an inflated value.

There’s rumours of Andretti coming in - but does he start a new team, or take over a Haas, Sauber, or Williams, with all their existing infrastructure, for the same money?

There’s some opposition to teams running third cars, because where a team or two are dominant, they can take the lion’s share of the points on offer at each event.

Maybe, once the new regulations stabilise a little, allow teams to run one of the previous year’s cars in the race, with the conditions that a driver can only run one or two seasons in that third car, and can’t score constructors’ points in the main championship.

The new Concorde Agreement that all the teams signed last year stipulates that any new team entering the sport must pay a fee of $200 million, which will be equally distributed to the existing teams. This is in addition to all the other startup costs, and the budget to go racing, making it certain that no new teams will ever enter F1 again unless they are major manufacturers.

There was a lot of talk about a Chinese team entering at some point, but I haven't heard much recently. Certainly a team from China could bring the financial backing to obtain an entry.
