Best Overtakes in F1
Discussion
On Sunday I saw one of the best overtakes I have seen in many years.
Lap 31, Norris overtaking Leclerc with two wheels on the grass. Absolutely fearless, and the kind of move that makes adrenaline rush through you just by watching, and somehow makes you feel terribly sick at the same time.
I think the last move that made me feel like that was Raikkonen around the outside at Eau Rouge, and up there with Mansell round the outside at Stowe in '92.
What's' your favourite overtake?

Mansell overtaking Piquet at Stowe in 1987.
The chase, lap record after lap record, final laps, the dummy. Full of drama and excitement.
I have to say also, whilst the overtake itself wasn't great, for sheer drama and circumstances of last lap, last race, championship-deciding position - Hamilton overtaking Glock in Interlagos in 2008.

I thought of this straight away.Hakkinen was a driver who did his talking on the track
In recent years, Hamilton and Rosberg, Bahrain 2014.

Several changes of the lead, neither driver giving the other an inch more than they had to, for three or four laps.

I've only heard it described; it's probably not on film, but Jim Clark trying to overtake an uncooperative Innes Ireland, mid 1960s, while simultaneously fending off Dan Gurney. Every time Clark made a move up the inside, Ireland would chop him off. Next corner, Clark backed off slightly, letting Gurney through; Ireland and Gurney then had a wobble and Clark sailed round the outside, job done.

I had forgotten that one - brilliant use of the backmarker to prevent the weaving defence! In terms of important, I think Russell on Bottas at Sakhir was pretty stellar - same car, same tyres and he put a move on the incumbent. It felt like watching a changing of the guard.

Ah yes, the one where’s he’s totally crossed-up sideways around the first corner, but somehow still manages to stop Senna getting back past. https://www.formula1.com/en/latest/video.classic-o...
Piquet on Senna at Hungary in 86 is epic.
If you watch races over a few laps, not just overtake clips, a lot of Prosts moves were sublime, either intense pressure or very decisive, planned stuff.
Mansell on Senna at Hungary, but that was largely due to a backmarker, but his move into Peralta on Berger was perhaps one of the best ever.
Jacques on Schuey at Estoril is one, Hakkinen on Schuey also in 99 was it?
Villeneuve on Jones into Tarzan in 79, round the outside. John Watson at Long Beach in about 82, overtook three guys in one lap, amazing stuff.
But my fave would be Alonso and Webber into Eau Rouge, better driving from both you will never see. Makes the garbage witnessed on Sunday by our supposed top drivers seem a world away doesn't it?

That is a great call.https://www.formula1.com/en/latest/video.classic-o...
1 - It was awesome
2 - It was ballsy and also a bit on the grass
3 - It looked mega cool to then manage to keep hold of the slide.
Superb.
Others as above - particularly Hakkinen / Schumacher at Spa 2000 where they go either side of a backmarker... crazy
But others...off the top of my head:
Mansell on Berger, Mexico 89
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V2g1yrGputA&ab...
Senna's ballsy move on Nannini, Suzuka 89 (what should have happened earlier, had Prost not done a Verstappen and taken him out - don't @ me )

Mansell on Senna Hungary 89

Brazil 88
Senna started in the spare car from the pitlane, stormed through most of the field (when the field was nearer 30 cars), then was eventually black flagged after making it all the way to second place. But before that...magic.... as evidenced at 3.08 here... on Nannini and Nakajima (?) in the same corner.... even hesitating before going for the second one..Just made it look so effortless.

Webber on alonso at Spa, 2011. On the outside of eau rouge.

Mansell on Senna Spain 1991 - we all know this one.

From more modern times...
For sheer "if he comes through there, he's definitely dead" bravery, Barichello keeping his foot in it when Schumacher tried to put him in the pit wall. Can't remember the race or year.
Verstappen around the outside of Rosberg in the wet in Brazil.

I was in the Stowe Grandstand and it was exciting stuff indeed - and I speak as somebody whose enthusiasm for Mansell was well in check. The problme issue with questions like this is that almost every GP prior to the mid Seventies is ruled out of any consideration . The chase, lap record after lap record, final laps, the dummy. Full of drama and excitement.
