I have a 1967 Camaro race car which I plan to race in the UK. It has a steel roll cage. However, I need to identify the type of steel that it is constructed of. I need to establish that its cold drawn seamless steel and that the steel is unalloyed carbon steel with maximum of 0.3% carbon.

I can get a small camera inside the tubing to establish that its CDS. Does anyone have any ideas about the steel analysis? One route could be portable XRF does anyone know of any rental possibilities in the Kent or East Sussex areas?

Hello
Scrute here
Is the cage the proper cage for the car, or is it “home” made?

1.5.2. Each ROPS manufactured after 1.1.97 for which Motorsport UK or the FIA has issued a ROPS (Roll cage) Certificate must bear an identification plate which details the manufacturer and the manufacturer’s part number allocated to the cage. Details of this identity plate are to be included on the ROPS (Roll cage) certificate.

Can you prove it was made prior to the date given?
Does it come with any identifying features on it?
I must admit, I do wonder whether the person who wrote that K.1.4.1 specification in the blue book, gave it any thought as to how it was ever going to be policed.
Material Cold Drawn Seamless Unalloyed Carbon Steel, containing a maximum of 0.3% of carbon

1.4.2 Doesn’t really help either

1.4.2. In selecting the steel, attention must be paid to obtaining good elongation properties and adequate weldability .... and?

Let us know how you get on with the XRF hire, or PM me, I’ll see if I can help any further without bogging the thread down with blue book minutiae.
