Michael Masi should be replaced
Discussion
Michael Masi is not up to the job of running a F1 Grand Prix. He had a hard act to follow as Charlie Whiting did a brilliant job but Masi is clearly one of those guys who wants to be the show rather than being in the shadows enabling others to shine
We have seen far too many red flags this season, far too many petty penalties and to top it all the Spa Grand Prix has to be the worst ‘race’ in living memory. We saw evidence of confusion, poor decision making and a two lap ‘race’ just so that F1 didn’t have to refund fans etc.
2022 might see better cars that enable racing but with Masi in charge we will continue to see numerous red flags and penalties for all sorts of so called minor infringements. Watching LeMans and the Touring Cars yesterday reminded me Racing doesn’t have to be the sterile by the rule book Masi type of show.
The guy reminds me of a parking warden.
Just looked at his cv no experience in racing seems to come from a marketing background.

Was expecting someone to start this thread, after yesterday’s farce of a ‘race’, with the bare minimum done purely to satisfy contractual agreements and avoid having to refund the fans.
Too much leaning on FIA, by FOM people with commercial interests. There needs to be more separation between church and state.
Lewis said it right.

Who’s your suggested replacement?
In the GP thread yesterday I said I could see in time Vettel replacing him and would be a great choice. But for now Masi hasn’t done enough/anything personally wrong for him to go. Hopefully lessons will be learnt from yesterday and move on. Edited by Petrus1983 on Sunday 12th December 17:33

You obviously haven't been around for long if you can't remember US GP 2005 then...cc3 said:

Le Mans and Touring Cars are incomparable with F1. The rule book is clear and mostly written well before Masi rocked up.Although I agree race day ticket holders should get some sort of refund or discount for next year.
Why replace him? Those that decide who would replace him will just replace him with someone else that also 'understands' what is required of them.
Masi clearly understands that his decisions should always take in to account commercial pressures and opportunities. His replacement would have to understand that too.

Went to my first GP in 1968 and 2005 US GP, Michelin provided a refund to fans. When you say rule book is clear ! It is so clear no team or TV commentator had a clue what the rules were yesterday !! so pull the other one. F1 is dull these days and will only get worse with Masi in charge. Endless red flags and pointless penalties. Although I agree race day ticket holders should get some sort of refund or discount for next year.
Yesterday's farce was all about money. Running two laps behind the safety car and calling it a race means they can tick the box to say a race happened. This means no ticket refunds and anyone who bought travel insurance to cover themselves against the race being cancelled can't claim off that either. Big corporations looking after themselves and each other at the expense of ordinary folk, as is the way of the world.
What would Bernie E have done differently? Found a way to get to the same position, but quicker.

The issue wasn't Masi; it's the rule book he's been to govern with. I agree points should not have been awarded yesterday but according to the rule book, they should have been. Sort out the regulation, not the messenger.Too much leaning on FIA, by FOM people with commercial interests. There needs to be more separation between church and state.

As for people complaining (elsewhere on social media) that the race should have been abandoned at 2pm instead of stringing it out for 4 hours, well hindsight is a wonderful thing and had Masi cancelled the race at 2pm can you imagine the rage from fans and viewers accusing him of jumping the gun?

It’s previously been called an over-emphasis on “The Show”, usually in the form of a late safety car or red flag during an otherwise straightforward race. Yesterday’s farce (Lewis’s word) is the most egregious example yet, and most of us would be furious if we were several hundred quid in the hole for being out all day in the rain without seeing a race.
The correct call was probably to abandon at 18:00. Running around for a couple of laps, when they knew there was no real chance of going racing, was the farcical element.

As I said in the main GP thread, which of these previous red flags from the past 12 months do you think was unnecessary?Mugello start line multi-car pileup?
Grosjean fireball?
Russell and Bottas crash and debris at Imola?
Max's tyre blowout at Baku?
Max's 7000G crash at Silverstone?
Hungary turn 1 multi-car crash?

Masi began his career in motor racing volunteering for Super Touring teams while still at school. He worked as deputy race director in the Supercars touring car series and at Rally Australia. In 2018 he was appointed by the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile as the Formula Two and Formula Three deputy race director and was appointed deputy to F1 race director Charlie Whiting. - From Wiki.
