Hello all, we’re staying in Hastings, beautiful part of the U.K., not a bad place to live. But terrible roads, loads of potholes and generally badly damaged road surfacing. My car is shaking around like a good’un. It’d be annoying if you lived here.

I live in Battle, so about 5 miles from Hastings and frequently have to drive in and around Hastings. You are correct, the roads here are absolutely horrendous, they certainly make driving an unpleasant experience and God knows what damage it is doing to our cars.

I like driving, but driving in East Sussex in general and Hastings especially just isn't fun as it's just a pothole avoiding exercise. And often there are so many that you can't avoid them, you just have to grit your teeth and take the punishment.

It was too much to hope that they could have actually done some work on the roads during the many lockdowns, when the traffic was sparse and they could have done so with little holiday.

Just a word of warning too, if you're going to go to Brighton during your stay be prepared to sit in roadwork traffic jams for bloody ages too. The A27 is awful and if you try and go cross country there's massive delays getting into Lewes too.

It's a joke.

Yes sometimes it’s hard to tell if you are on a B road or a farm track down here…

Also annoying is the patchy hedge maintenance - all our cars pick up ‘go faster stripes’ down the side, due to having to cosy up with hedges when passing.

Everything here seems to be

In the last three years I've driven the length and breadth of mainland Britain; the condition of East Sussex roads is replicated just about everywhere.

It’s better the other way…try the road from Rye to Cripp’s Corner, or from Etchingham to Lewes.

The A27 is horrific, though. Avoid at all costs unless dual carriageway.

Ok.

All of them?

Every single road?

Cripps then up to the very long Roman road to hawkhurst *should* be amazing… but hitting those potholes the wrong side of 90 is genuinely scary!

Now I detour the back road and pass the castle at Bodium - nice view and removes the temptation to kill myself!

The Seddlescombe road is the hidden A21(M) at least in speed terms!

We’re off to Rye today, and Camber Sands. Looks like it’s well away from the A27. Might jump in the sea at Camber. smile

The roads are infinitely better in Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire. Not looking forward to crawling back there tomorrow.

I was saying to my wife, I wonder how rich, or otherwise, East Sussex council are.

Good luck with the crowds in Rye and Camber sands, every man and his dog and his family will be heading off there I'm afraid.

The best time to walk around Rye, Rye Harbour nature reserve or Camber Sands is in the autumn or winter, when all the tourists have gone home, but it can be a bit chilly!

Evening, Rye was really nice, quite busy but still really nice. Camber Sands…….bloody awful. A huge council estate.

Due to my sisters poor health, I am a regular visitor too Rye from Hayling Island, and yes, couldn't agree more, the roads are diabolical in East Sussex, after my last 2 trips, had to have my cars 4 wheel aligned. I now add 30 miles to my journey going via A3 Guildford, on to the M25 and pick up the 21 to Cripps Corner to Rye. Nice driving road, but alert for pot holes. The 27 is full of road works and slow traffic, but, the extra 30 miles, vis M25 knocks 30 minutes plus, off my travel time. Wish me luck, off to Rye again tomorrow.

Agree. Did you spot, or even better visit, the shop that is named a double entendre for oral sex? Shop has shelves of the style you use in a workshop garage and not much else!
