Just a quick question for the well informed among us.

I have always been on a 4-week notice period with work. Recently I was promoted but in the letter it was stated that they had changed my notice period to 6-weeks.

Can they change my contract like this? Is it a case of swings and roundabouts (we'll promote you but want some extra commitment). Is accepting the promotion considered to be accepting the new terms?

I expect I am stuffed, but am leaving soon so need to know whether to tell new employers 4 or 6 weeks!

Thanks
Max :)

It is common that the further up the chain you go - the longer notice periods tend to be. I think in accepting a payrise you accept the conditions that go with it?? ( I am sure some knowlefgeable bod will out you straight on that one).

I would suggest that getting promotion should require a review of your original contract anyway. If there is no mention of increased notice periods comensurate with promotion in the original contract, it might be advisable to request that a new contract be drawn up to take into account the new rights and responsibilities that go with your new position.

IMO it works in your favour. If you have six weeks notice, it means you will have to be paid for six weeks, but once an employer gets wind you are leaving they can't get you off the premises quickly enough.

Oh no... they have you doing the really cruddy jobs here rather than let you have any gardening leave!
