Government words for Tax

I was thinking today about the words the government uses instead of using the word Tax.

The words I thought of are:-

National Insurance (the big one)
Duty
Rates
VAT
License
Speeding fine ;)

Have I missed any?

Passport fee
Driving license fee

Lawyers fees (a tax on us to pay someone else to interpret unintelligible laws we pay politicians to draw up,amend or revoke)

Accountants fees (see above)

Land Registry fees (a tax to tell the government we own a bit of our land)


Benefits - taxes in reverse - largely paid to dishonest people who do not work - largely funded by honest people who work hard.

Mortgage interest - a tax on the fact that successive generations of politicians (currently the t0ss3r Prescott) whohave caused a housing shortage in parts of the coutnry through bad planning.

Enviromental Damage - ie blame greenhouse gasses as an excuse to pump up tax keeping them in funds and the Greenie party happy.

During the election, every elected/ re-elected NewLab MP seemed to be under contract to his Tonyness to say "Third Glorious Term" at every opportunity I think this translates as 'we will find new and ingenious ways of inventing taxes by any other name without increasing the basic rate of income tax.' After all, they did promise not to...

bitter after taste still here since 1997. Any suggestions?

Anyone here clear on what the "Tax" on Fuel is?

I thought it was part "fuel tax" and part "VAT"? Is one still taxed upon the other?....i.e. a tax upon a tax?

Has "purchase tax" totally diappeared? or is that still lurking somewhere?


Now I know that we all agree that in a community, some taxes MUST be paid, and that those with the most should pay the most.

But!! ........ALL together NOW!

Purchase tax has gone, we now have the benefit of VAT, which also helps pay for the obscenely expensive EU Common Agricultural Policy.

vetteheadracer - a bit of repititionn there, I think.

My list is pretty comprehensive actually as I happened to have a copy of the 2004/05 Tolley's Tax Guide handy for reference. I think the only one I might have omitted was the "Airport Tax".

Of course, included under the main headings I listed are lots of subdivisions of categories, schedules etc.
Excise duties in particular cover a vast array of products, services and rates.
