Got mixed feelings about this!
Here I am, in a lovely area of the world (Devon). Hardly any major traffic problems, only issue is with the old gibbers that gibber around but by and large its ok.
However I am stuck on my current wage and will continue to be so if I keep livig here.
I am currently in the process of applying for jobs in Reading that are £12k MORE than my salery now that I should easily get!!! So I gotta go where the money is a sidle back with my tail between my legs :(

well if youve lived here before, then I need not advise you on the no-go areas - mandalay court in particular, and many of the student roads off the wokingham road (I mean im a nice guy, but I would feel bad if you lived next to my house...)
Look on the bright side - its only 20 mins by train from the greatest city in the world....(and no im not talking about Slough - obviously)

Seeing as Devon house prices are the same as the rest of the country, you would think they would sort out their incomes too. I was on 12k down there, and I earn a hell of a lot more in Oxford.
If you cant survive down there then move, I would have stayed if I could have afforded it. I loved the southwest

I'm moving to Exeter on Friday, but commuting back to Herts each week, hopefully to get the best of both worlds.
Definately a great area to live in from what I have experienced over the past 6 months going down there every weekend. Loads to do/see, better pace of life etc etc... Salaries are low though, my friend says 12k is the average wage down there which is very low compared with around here.
Reading is a good City, loads to do there as well, but I think I would miss the South West if I had to move back up this way.

Hertford v's Reading is no match whatsoever. I like hertfordshire, the type of people that generally live here, and the lifestyle I have at home.
Reading is ok, and I have a laugh at uni there, but I couldnt live there long term - its just too David Brent for my liking....
I will miss the westcountry but its for the good of my finances and my career and my general way of life that I have to move back.
I want to pay off my debts, save up money for a house and have a bit of fun. cant do that here

Mine always seem to take 40 mins!
aha, what I mean was coming back from london, if you get the bristol temple meads, port talbot, cardiff, train etc with reading as a first stop, it takes about 20 mins. Generally, going into london, if its a normal train it does take about 40 oddd mins..
As an aside, when you get off the train, and walk to the car/town/etc, do you ever get the little bloke in the Tea cosy hat coming up to you and saying "hello mate im really sorry to disturb you, but im really hungry ive not eaten for days can you help me?"
even when you tell him to bugger off he wishes youa good evening!
His certainly the most polite begger ive ever met!

It's the same in most places where people like to retire. They have the money behind them to pay what people are asking & prices get bumped up. A few of the people I grew up with are moaning that they can't afford to buy in the village their parents live in. Best thing that happended to them IMO. If they want to stay local then Plymouth or Exeter is not too far & they can see there is more to life than being an inbred local. Of course it works the other way & like Gh0st, I would love to live in the SW but the pay isn't there. Probably set up a business down there & make the most of the retired folk who want a bit of work to curtail the boredom & the relatively cheap labour market.

I need the big money for about 5 years in order to plough the money into my own buisness so i can move back.

Oh the days of working for the Met Office in Bracknell - used to pay my phone bill at the post office. Hillarious.
