Petrol V8 A8 - any experience?
Discussion
Standard wisdom is that the v8 Audi diesel in the A8 beats its V8 petrol counterpart.
Is the V8 petrol really so out-classed by its stablemate diesel V8?
I wonder how much of it is down to modern drivers being so used to torquey diesels that they give up on a car if they have to rev it?
Thinking I'd quite like a big old petrol V8 and just wondering if the A8 petrol V8 really is as bad as everyone says it is ... thanks

The older 4.0tdi A8 was a problematic, complex, heavy old thing, prone to timing chain stretch and at 270bhp not particularly quick. 4.2 petrol all the way.Is the V8 petrol really so out-classed by its stablemate diesel V8?

Are we talking D3s here?

Sorry, should have clarified in original post - considering both late D3s and all D4s; therefore budget is flexible between c £10k - £25k. Considering D3s as I slightly prefer the exterior design of the D3. Yes, the old 4 litre diesel is to be avoided. I have driven D3 and D4 4.2 diesels, and, yes, impressive. I have no experience of V8 petrol D3s and D4s however. I can't even find a decent road test or write-up on them, other than bland US reports. Obviously, their torque figures look poor in comparison to the V8 4.2 diesels. Just very little real world UK style reviews on them. You get a sort of vague sidebar reference to the petrol V8, and then it's back to the eulogies about how great the 4.2 TDis are and to get them instead. So maybe that's what I would just do! However, I like petrol V8s, don't mind sacrificing a bit of torque and just wondered if anyone had a petrol V8 D3 or D4 that they hopefully liked. Ta
The 4.2 petrol V8 is basically the same as found in the S5 so it's a decent unit but does suffer with head coking & some chain stretching if you're unlucky.
You have to work it harder to get going & this is why most people go for the 4.2d as it's just effortless, which suits the character of the A8 more than revving out an N/A V8.
If you go to the higher end of you budget then the 4.0TT V8 is a better match:
