Hi,

I have a first generation SV650S (half-faired) which I got as my first motorbike back in March last year (passed test in Feb 2020). I've done about 5k mixed riding in the time I've had it, and although the riding position isn't as bad as I originally found it I do still find it tricky when doing tight slow speed turns given the riding position and can get painful clutch wrist (potentially mild/early carpel tunnel I would guess given my outdoor sport choices).

My thoughts are to replace it with an SV650 (naked), my worry is that they appear to all be less than 5 years old and carry a hefty premium of only being a grand or two less than buying brand new! Another alternative I'm thinking about is the MT-07 but same again about pricing, if anything they appear more expensive again.

Or should I consider something completely different? I had in mind a budget of around 3k for something in good condition, but have all reasonable bikes shot off into stratosphere pricing?

Thoughts welcome.

Thanks,

Seight_Returns

I had a first gen SV650s and then a second gen naked SV650.

The naked SV650 was more comfortable but still a compact bike.

Is it the riding position or the clutch action that's causing you problems ? If the later then maybe something with a hydraulic clutch or even a DCT gearbox if the wrist pain is really troubling.

I'm on a VFR800 at the moment - very comfortable and affordable.

I think the riding position is what I find more challenging, I don’t recall having the same difficulties on the Gladius that I used learning to ride.

I've just purchased a new SV650 to do the commute on, had a half fairing version a few years back. The new one is the better ride, the fuel injection along with the low speed assist make it a doddle to do the commute on, I really cannot fault it. To be honest I looked around for a second hand one and ended up buying new £5800 out of the door with a 3 year warranty.

The new ones with fuel injection started in 2016 I think, nice bike. There's some good finance deals on both them and MT07's, you could put a few hundred quid down and pay peanuts a month.

The SV650S has a very odd riding position. The bars are not that low but I find that they are quite far away from the seat. I find proper sports bikes to be more comfortable but its a personal thing due to differing body types. I'm prepared to put up with it though as they are cracking bikes for the money. Personally im waiting to see what PCP deals will be available when the R7 gets launched I'm this country.

I've just picked up an immaculate 2009 Gladius with 6k on the clock for £2300.

As a happy shopper it's not a bad bike really, even though it was only bought as an emergency, temporary bike I think it might be staying with me now.

Is there anymore at that price ? Seems the lowest I’ve heard of at moment.

Edit - never mind bought a striple instead

SV1000S? They're getting a bit old now but amplify the feelings you likely like from the 650 and are comfy and reliable....
