I just saw an advert for one of these and wondered about a first vehicle for my niece, her recently passing her test.
£1,000 no offers.
To me only the road tax would be a down side at such a tiny purchase price. £305 i believe. The car offers a pretty bulletproof Honda engine which revs to 7,000 rpm, it's part time 4wd when needed, has 5 doors, the lights especially at the rear are very good, cam belts are a £300 job rather than making the car effectively a write off as with some old cars when they need doing (cost wise), it just seems to offer an awful lot for a grand. 82,000 miles isn't silly either, bloody low in fact.
Good, high sitting position, big glass areas for vision outwards, huge mirrors, front fog lamps, in fact i'd say this is THE best way a new driver could spend a grand. It's gotta be up there?

Can't go wrong with older petrol Hondas.

Might get better insurance quotes on something like an HRV than the similar pensioner/young person favourite the Honda Jazz.

(Don't some of the HRVs have 3 front seats like the Fiat Multipla?)

Absolutely.
I bet insurance is reasonable being a car like that. The petrol engines in these will go on forever. My 2.0ivtec CRV is/was a really good car.

Hopefully a manual will be not too bad on fuel, my auto CRV only got 22mpg.

They have good visibility, decent size too. So yes, I'd absolutely recommend one as a first car (assuming the styling doesn't put anyone off!)

I know the FRV has 3 front seats, didn't realise the HRV might have too!

Aha, perhaps it was the FRV I was thinking of.... (Too many similarly named crossovers in the line up)

I’ve wondered about these as a first car too. They did a two door which I think is kind of cool in a 90s retro never-really-did-take-off kind of way. Good ones are quite thin on the ground though. I have a eBay search saved for them…
Would be interested to know if the insurance really is relatively cheap.

My wife had a 51 plate HR-V, petrol and was pretty strong engined, did just over 20k in the year she had it. Rust was the killer. Fuel economy was not ideal, she struggled to see 21mpg on a good day, with most of her driving around 17mpg. It served a purpose for £750 in 2017. Insurance was cheapish, but wasn't her first car, so that could be a factor.

Don't seem to be Euro4 compliant if that's an issue for you. So some cities will charge a fee to enter.
