Looking for something comfortable and reliable to cover daily 10 mile round trip to the station and occasional longer (200m+) journeys.
Budget is somewhat flexible but as it's going to spend half it's life sitting in the station car park then I don't want to spend a great deal.
I've always wanted to try a Lexus after years of faithful service from Land Cruisers so thought about a GS.
A GS460 would be ideal but they're few and far between! So it basically boils down to a 3rd gen GS300 or spend quite a bit more and get a 4th gen Gs250.
Any experience with either? Comfort and reliability is the main priority but, living in Northern Scotland, overtaking punch and some ability over a moorland road would come in handy. Is 35 mpg on a run realistic?

I have a Gen 3 GS300 SE-L and it is fantastic.
Bought it after selling my F11 535d Touring as I daily commuting and just want something comfortable to rack up the miles. Will e buying another ‘posh’ estate at the end of the year.
Great car - refined, comfortable, all the things you need (cruise, heated / cooled seats, Mark Levinson stereo, sat nav etc) and I think really economical. You can get an indicated 40 mpg on a long motorway run and averaging around 34 mpg with motorway and town work.
Milne has had a recon gearbox (there are numerous accounts of issues for some reason) and an air con condenser otherwise all is well.
May be up for sale if interested.

Thanks, all sounds perfect. Does the engine feel reasonably strong? The economy is impressive - more or less what I was getting from my 2014 E350 cdi!Bought it after selling my F11 535d Touring as I daily commuting and just want something comfortable to rack up the miles. I wasn't thinking for another couple of months but could be tempted if the colours are right?
Very different to a large capacity turbo diesel as you would imagine. Power builds as revs rise rather than that slug of torque low down.
However, even coming from the 313 hp / 467 lb ft of the F11 I don’t feel hard done by.
It is far more refined, and the BMW was not bad anyway, and can get a wriggle on when needed. It seems to like operating below 2,500 rpm unless you give the accelerator a good prod but that is just gearbox mapping.
The manual function, whilst not a patch on the 7G-tronic or ZF8, actually works quite well if you want some engine braking.
I think I am a couple of mpg average over the BMW which I think is great!
Dark blue exterior and cream leather interior with the smart SE-L ‘thick’ 5 spoke alloys.

I had a 3nd Gen GS430 and a 2st Gen GS300
They are very good cars, I always feel stifled a little by the gearbox in the 2 and 3 which was slow and dim witted.
35mg only on a run,
20mpg in town, about 25mpg average.
12mpg when pushing it..its heavy car that makes its power from displacement, it is a very expensive car to drive fast. Its not like a hot hatch that won't do less than 25mpg even if you drive it like you stole it.
Very well judged chassis, supple, yet always remaining in control. Most people who got in the car were surprised how stiff it was laterally, however this could be a problem with a the beefy anti roll bars thumping when you hit a pothole on one side.
Smooth, friction free steering and controls.
Watch out for leaking power steering from the front pipe/cooler. The EGR sensor lasts about 60,000 miles before throwing a light, but cheap and easy to fix.
If you are used to a manual, tuck your left foot under when first driving or you will hit the handbrake pedal like its a clutch with your left foot !

Thanks for the economy warning but although I do drive quite quickly I tend to concentrate on anticipation and smoothness in a big car rather than thrashing around like I would in something sporty. Dispatching dawdling tourists is my main reason for wanting something with at least some power - driving a diesel Hilux is frustrating sometimes!
Everything else sounds great though, including the dark blue/cream combination. Feel free to post some details/pics when you're ready to sell. I was probably thinking in a couple of months time.

Not sure how much you want to spend but a GS250 can be had for sensible money:

There's also a decent alternative in the Infiniti stable:
