911 Cab - Mulling over a bucket list car
Discussion
Hi all,
The wife and I are both handing back leased cars shortly, we've come in to a little money which isn't life changing but does provide some options we'd perhaps otherwise have overlooked. To frame the decision, we love comfortably so no need to take otherwise sensible decisions like property.
Family unit is, two kids both under 10 and a dog. My initial search was either an RS4 or more favourably a C43 Wagon with perhaps an equal spend on a C/E220/300 Cab. Somewhere in the 35k ball park.
However, we then began thinking differently and I threw the 911 hat in to the ring. My knowledge of 911's in general is sketchy from a residual perspective, there are 2011 cars priced as expensively as 2017 models, for example. But, in terms of the proposition, a proper 2+2 whilst the kids are able to actually sit in it "comfortably" is what is alluring. Especially as post pandemic we're likely to be doing 6-8k a year in it.
We've seen a few base 911 (seems to be the sweet spot) with the 3.0T engine, again perhaps not the purist pick, but safest option with encroaching emissions laws and such I feel, plus added performance and remap potential. I'd guess we'd have 70k to spend on the right car. As the title suggests I'm really looking at the cab models for fun factor.
Ownership wise, I'm thinking probably 3 years as by then the kids will be complaining about the size of the rear, bit who knows maybe we'd keep it. From an "investment" perspective we're therefore factoring hopefully 10-20k depreciation, does that sound realistic? As above the residuals for years/edition seem all over the place.
On top of the 911, I'd then buy much cheaper 15k family wagon to sling a wet dog in, possibly a C220 Wagon. That can take the boring miles and family outings. Otherwise perhaps an A4 Avant.
So, does that sound at all sensible? Am I mad with EV pushing the market so hard, are residuals in prestige cars going to get whacked hard?
Also interested to know which 911's present the safest bet with residuals, options that Porsche shoppers look towards, and of course from any 991 owners as that's what I've been looking at model wise, but 997/996 also in scope I guess.
Thanks!

I'd say take a look at the Targa model, the 3.8 is actually the pick & you'll have a bit more space.

As for the daily I'd go for well spec'd low mileage mainstream ULEZ/CAZ compliant wagon.

Thanks for the 911 recommendations, I need to read up on the Targa, must admit the cab has been the real focal point and I wasn't aware of the extra space?
When you say the 3.8 is the pick, do you mean that from driving experience or from a residual perspective? All the video I've seen has said all things considered the 3.0T is a solid engine and it more urgent at lower revs.
Also conscious of this bore scoring issue? Does anybody know which specific engines/era this impacts?
With regards to the wagons, as a 38yo I struggle with the idea of any of those but welcome suggestions as they're definitely not cars I'd look at otherwise.
I've got a great Mercedes independent near me so have tended towards Merc.

The 3.0 is more urgent as the extra low down torque makes it's presence felt everywhere but for me the 3.8/4.0 are a bit more organic for me, what I would say is test drive both (preferably back to back) to see which delivery you prefer, there really isn't a wrong answer. When you say the 3.8 is the pick, do you mean that from driving experience or from a residual perspective? Again with the wagons jump in some (it won't do any harm) & see if the German alternatives are actually better when you're comparing on a cost basis.

.
It was the standard (non-turbo) engines in the 996 and 1st generation 997 I believe, so up to 2008 give or take. They were also vulnerable to IMS bearing failures. As with all things like this, the issue is often exaggerated a bit, but it does affect their values. When you say the 3.8 is the pick, do you mean that from driving experience or from a residual perspective? If it was me I'd buy a 4.0 Boxster GTS. As much as I love the idea of family days out in the Porsche, I'm just not sure it would happen enough to justify having to have a 2+2, and I always find that my driving manner is very different when I have one of the kids in it, so much so that I may as well be in the comfortable family car.
