For Information - 'A Ticking'

A few weeks ago a thread was raised concerning a definite ticking noise in the engine bay (serpentine)that could be heard all the time whilst driving at relatively low speed at around 2000/3000 rpm on light throttle, but not necessarily on acceleration or just on over-run. :grumpy:

There were various suggestions which varied from a leak in the manifolds/cam or followers worn/little ends shot/valve rocker pads broken/belt tensioner/stone in belt amonst others. :eek:

I also had this tick which was irritating to say the least because to me, it overshadowed an otherwise smooth engine note.
Whilst under the bonnet fiddling as you do, I happened to look inside the belt where it has it's longest run between pulley's and there imbedded in one of the grooves was the tiniest of stone chips (about 3mm) which I duly picked out with a pair of tweezers.

I could not believe this stone could be the cause of the tick, but I started the engine anyway and went for a run and the ticking noise had gone.

This thread is for those of you who have or get a tickin the future.

Try the easy option first you never know your luck. :)
